Hi all
Decided to bite the bullet over the weekend and clean the my chain, chain guide and drive sprocket etc.
What a crap job Sad Took the fairing off removed the sprocket cover and immediatley began to wish i hadn't bothered.
Looks like the the poor bike has never been looked after properly and its a testemant to Honda it still going so well.
The entire sprocket / chain guide area was solid with thick black gunge which took 3 hours of knee crunching cleaning with petrol to remove.

Also removed the hugger and cleaned the swing arm, rear sprocket and suspension bushes while i was at it. My most hated job to date.

So anyway finished up and with it all sparkly and clean...job done.

But, since i did this the bike feels a lot more jumpy and the front end is popping up quite often.

Can a deep clean of the above parts make much of a difference in performance or is it all psychosomatic ? Its not like ive suddenly changed my riding style overnight.

I can't see how it would make a huge difference to be honest, but it may help a tiny bit because you'd have less resistance on the drive sprocket now without all the shit rubbing against it.

I did that job on my last bike before I broke it. It is a long teadeous job, but makes you feel good when its done, plus looks a lot better.

But, I did not experience the aftermath you are experiencing though. Cleaning the sprocket would not do anything to the power. It must be the Evil kanevil coming out of you.

Got any pics?

Your not wrong. Thought i'd never get it finished.
The amount of crap that had accumulated around the chain guide was the worse bit.
Was gonna take pics but my gloves ripped and the missus threatened to throw a match in the bowl with my cleaning petrol if i touched anything !
Does make you feel good though when its all gleaming and you know youve done a good job.
Shame it won't last long before its all crappy again.
Funny how whenever i do any work to the bike it always feels different for a while afterwards. Just paranoid Smile

Why are you using petrol rather than a proper degreaser? It'd probably be less work as well...

Why not? I use paraffin & fairy liquid to clean my chain.

Nothing wrong with petrol, Just make sure you grease the moving parts up really well afterwards. Thumbs Up

Yeah, but how do you get rid of it afterwards? It's hardly bio-degradable though is it?

Do you mean the waste or off the bike?

If it is waste then that should be obvious. Off of the bike, I just use a rag to wipe it clean. It is really easy.

When you grease up the chain after using petrol, is it fine to use just Castrol chain lube (the white silicon spray) or do you need a more oily one to get to the O rings?

I guess. Even with petrol at 1.20 a litre it's still cheaper than Muc-off degreaser at 5 quid for half a litre! Smile

ive been using chainsaw oil as its supposed to cling better but still makes a mess the first time you do a high speed run Smile

Personally I hate using these chain lubes and I am not a great fan of wasting good oil on a chain, so I always use grease. It lasts longer and IMO is better.

Oh and listen to Bofh5 on the petrol meets chain scenario. Wink

Spray on grease is good if you never ride in the rain.

Used engine oil is good, if you do ride in the rain.

This is because in the rain, the spray sends up lots of dirt that will get on the chain.

With oil it flings off, with grease it becomes a grinding paste.
