Tricky one this (as will be made clear) but I need to boost my resistance to infection without boosting my immune system...

Quick history -

About 12 months ago, after a lot of joint pain, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritus and started on various painkillers and NSAIDs for the symptoms.

I also have to take what are basically immunosupressing drugs (they use the same drugs for cancer patients) to lower my immune system so my arthritus does have too much effect on my day to day life.

The downside to this (apart from having to inject myself... Confused ) is that I have little resilience to coughs and colds, in the last 9 months I have been taken off my feet 3 times by what most people would shrug off in a week.

The problem with this is that I work with children, little biological warfare merchants that they are, and so week in, week out I exposes myself to various germs and viruses.

So, what can I do to try and combat the germs?

If I boost my immune system my Arthritus flares (and eventually they will boost my drugs too), if I carry on as I am I get sick about every 8 weeks....

Anybody help?

Sorry dude, in all seriousness, hope you find the answers you need, have you asked the docs etc? seems kinda hard to boost disease resistance without immune system as I thought that basically was the immune system?

Might be worth using that first defence handwash etc often too when around kids/others other than that not sure what else to suggest.

Indeed resistance to disease is the responsibility of the immune system so prevention is your best bet, just try to stop the kids sneezing in your face, keep hands clean, everything you use to eat/drink out of sterile, might want to wear gloves when washing things up or cleaning up mess, plus many other examples that im sure you can think of as you go about your daily life.

Sorry to hear about it anyway dude, never liked the sound of immunosuppresants when I was learning about transplantation and such, good luck with everything.

Aye, agree with ghostrider.

You will also probably want to keep yourself wrapped up warm, although that mainly prevents the immune systems effect dying... Thinking

Tis a pickle I grant you.

Exacerbated by the fact that theres no cold vaccine for a reason... theres bloody hundreds of strains.

Most cough/cold treatments tend to focus around boosting the immune system, even the holistic stuff.

However for my money it would be best to develop a liking for /very/ spicy food. How I tend to get rid of persistent coughs is a few shots of tobasco sauce. That wakes you up Neutral

...for what it's worth, I was told that garlic is very good at boosting the body's immune system naturally...but Sick

I guess if you take enough and breathe on the little peeps they may keep their distance which could help? Laughing

...oh, another one is lavender, but you'll smell like your Grandma which may not be good either - rubbish, eh?

A good high vitamin C/antioxidant intake should help your bodies ability to heal itself. Something that is supressed by many of the drugs you will be taking.

star fruits, wall nuts, brazil nuts and peaches are all supposed to be "super" foods high in anti oxidants etc.......

3 brazil nuts a day constitues your rda, so you could chuck a couple in a salad you dont have to go mad

general all round balanced diet will help too i'd have thought. check out things like heathy eating website, you are what you eat that type of thing
