Depends,

If you are going to a nice expensive (rip-off) gym like L.A fitness or something you will probably get an induction whereby someone will show you around, maybe even write you out a plan depending on your goals etc (though personally I'd pay very little attention to this).

If, on the other hand, you are going to a blood/sweat/grime gym (my kinda joint) then the guy will probably sign you up and point you in the direction of the bench press, leaving you to figure out the rest.

Search the Random Banter/Ask auntie BCF sections for a couple of pages and you will find this kind of topic has been covered quite a bit in the past few weeks and you should be able to get all the information you need to get started. Failing that there is always www.bodybuilding.com, but careful not to get overwhelmed by the shear volume of contradictory articles on there, just keep it simple for now.

Good luck, train hard

all i've been eating the last few weeks is fruit. mainly apples/oranges/bananas and havnt been eating much else and just drinking water.

i've just been reading saying you've gotta mix your diet and dont stay on the same sort of thing, is this true??

whats the best sort of things to eat as i havnt got a clue about all the nutrition side of things?

They will probably show you round, if not ask them to.
If you want to improve fitness - cardio, and id you want to bulk or even just shape up a bit strength training as well as the cardio.

Food wise, steer clear of crap (read junk food, high badfat foods and sugary stuff) ~note i didnt say /all/ fat, you will still need some from foods.

Eat lots of clean protein, meat/fish/eggs.
Make sure to eat plenty of fruit and veg.
Drink enough water (2ltrs a day and more when exercising)

On the whole just try and get a balanced diet of the food groups and eat enough to keep you going, don't try starving yourself.

You need a balanced diet.....

Why exactly do you want to go to a gym to get fit ?
Are you just looking to just get bigger musles or are you simply wanting to feel better.
Try walking or running for a bit to boost fitness and some gentle excersises.
Search the net for some that you can do or find a charity shop with one of the vids going cheap.

You will then feel even better as you will have cash in your pocket as well as feeling fitter.

Its a big topic widely open to debate, and the trouble is I will say one thing, and someone else will come along and say that Im talking shit and say another. Yet another will come along and say we are both wrong and suggest their idea. Your best bet is to look around the nutrition articles/beginner basics part of www.bodybuilding.com, fomr that, whatever your aims are, you should be able to get all the info you need.

This works for me and I need to keep fit for football and I am 42.

Firstly watch what you eat but don't go mental, be sensible. I usually just cut out the five "C's" or limit it.

Cheese
Chips
Crisps
Coke
Chocolate

Run every other day for a month keeping a spread sheet of your progress trying to triple the starting distance by the end.

By now you should feel fitter and lighter then you can start working out. All I do is the following:

Press ups - 3 sets until failure
Sit ups - 3 sets of 50
Flys - 3 sets of 18
Bicep curls - 3 sets of 12

Do this for eight weeks (including the running) gradually increasing the number of sets and you should be in a position to kick on from there.

Works for me anyway and doesn't cost a bean.
