New helmet, only a week or two old... and Whoops! I drop it today! Embarassed Bit of a bummer! Sad
I dropped it from just below my waist, worried about the integrity of it.

There is a visible crack, but it's on a air vent, you can peel it back and see that the helmet isn't cracked underneath.
Not sure about it as the air vent took the impact.
Thought I'd ask you guys

Pics included. . .

General concensus is that damage occurs when the lid is dropped while full (of head). Compression of layers etc.

A low empty drop is unlikely to have diminished it's safety.

However some claim any drop is not worth the risk.

Personally I'd still wear it, but it's your head, so your choice.

I dropped my helmet about 10 times and it also rolled off my Mums car roof. I then crashed wearing the same helmet and i come off completely fine (well at least my head did).

Still use the helmet tbh. Although i keep meaning to replace it.

I'm another one who thinks that there need to be a head in the helmet when it hits something for the polystyrene instead to get squished.

Having said that, the outer is important too, so it depends what you dropped it onto. Id still use it anyway if it was just from waist height, but onto concrete is worse than onto a carpet or grass.

Another side to the polystyrene squishing, is that I now believe that a helmet that has seen a lot of use being pulled on and off, will have had its polystyrene squished so wont be as tight a fit, as something that has been only put on and off a few times.

It may even be that a new nitro helmet is better protection than an ari that is two years old and has been used a lot.

I met someone who bought fresh tyres for his bike every month, bought a brand new bike every few years, and bought a cheap new lid every year. Im starting to come round to his point of view to some extent.

Or those who race and see the abuse a helmet can take in an accident, and would rather know that their's is as good as it can be should the worst happen...

Or you know, like you said, people who say that are just saying it for extra money.

Either or.

Can you send helmets back to the manufacturers for a check-up (maybe an x-ray)?

I've always thought that sweat causes more damage than a small drop.

If you think about it, all the layers absorb the sweat, then it dries. It happens over and over until you're left with a shiny lid on the outside, but compressed rotting layers on the inside!

Hate the thought of it really... Confused

Yes, Arai offer this service. Send to it Phoenix distribution, takes about 2 weeks. That said, pack it up well, it's going to get lobbed around a lot in the post. Laughing

It's up to you, but I'd buy a new one, that's just me though.

Never replaced a helmet yet just because I have dropped it, but as someone else has said, its your choice, (although I suspect someone will be along soon to tell me my choice is wrong) Shocked

Cut it in half and see if its compressed. Only way to be safe lol.

How did you pay for it? Could you be insured. Failing that claim on house insurance saying you keep it on your mantle piece and it fell off.

How you pay for it makes zero difference, he dropped it himself after buying, no one is at liberty to replace it except him.

I think you may have to specifically add motorcycle gear to house insurance policies, so have a read of yours.

Aren't you insured if you pay for stuff by credit card?

Well I put locked it to the helmet lock on my bike and when I got back it was gone. Someone must of cut the strap or something.

Not to my knowledge....I was under the impression that was only if the place you bought it from was dodgey and you didn't get any goods after you'd paid for them.

That's only because that particular Barclaycard comes with gadget insurance as a special offer.

How you thought credit cards will replace things you break just because they are credit cards is beyond me Confused

And to the OP - as said, it's your choice. If it didn't fall from a great height or land on something particularly nasty (e.g. large pieces of gravel that are fairly pointy) it should be okay, but as said, it's your head.
