PostPosted: 11:46 - 17 Mar 2004    Post subject: compulsory bicycle helmets? Reply with quote

Following on from various other 'nanny state' antics that we've had imposed on us, the government seem to be looking at making bicycle helmets compulsory. At the moment they are looking to bring in legislation that will only affect the under 16's, but have been talking of a later proposal aimed at adults.

What does everyone think? Would you/Do you wear one?

Question

Yeah with Luke, not a chance!

Hell I'd not wear a helmet if I could see above 30mph. Laughing Yes I know I could come off and kill myself, but that would be my choice.

I used to wear a helmet off road but never on road?!!

Mainly because I used to ride around like a twat and try to kill myself off road, but I usually rode quite sensibly on road. I always wore a helmet to protect myself from me really and never really considered the danger from other vehicles.

What happened to personal choice?

I think this country is getting ridiculous, I initially thought I was living in a democracy, just shows how wrong you can be.

I used mine when off road or messing about or night riding.

Its not new, OZ has had them compulsory for ages. If they make them compulsory they should remove the VAT on them.

I used to work in a bike shop and you would always get parents coming in buying helmets for their kids and trying to buy them lose so the kid grows into them Rolling Eyes

Used to wear them, saved my brain a couple of times (found a nice imprint from the front sprockets in my helmet once Confused ), but don't wear it now. Can't really be bothered half the time, and most the time when I crash it doesn't affect my head so I see no point. Although I might start wearing one now after crashing and bashing my head.

Considering that the law now states that any driver involved in an accident with a bicycle has to pay the cyclists hospital fees I think anything likely to minimise damage is a bloody good thing.
Some countries even make skaters and cyclists wear knee and elbow protectors Very Happy

So even if it wasn't your fault you gave to pay. Shocked Question

Also wouldn't it make more sense to change the law so that you don't have to pay for hospital fees rather than having another law in reaction to this law.

Anyway, if people want to ride without helmets it's fine with me, as I've said many times before suicide is legal.

Hi

Never had a cycle helmet, and never worn one. No wish to wear one either (and I have knocked myself out on a bicycle).

I do not think they should be compulsory, same for on a motorcycle.

All the best

Keith

Make kids wear them, let adults choose.

I once was going down a hill and a car pulled out of a side road. I just missed him, but if I had not then without a helmet I reckon I would be roadkill. The old melon "head" experiment springs to mind. I still don't wear a helmet though.

To suggest the idea of not wearing a helmet on a motorcycle seems a bit extreme. I would still want to wear one if I was riding a BMW C1! Bet going down the motorway at 80 with no helmet and stones flying at you would change your mind.

Neal.

No its not! Razz

I personally wouldn't wear one. But I live in a city that has cyclelanes that go pretty much everywhere and are off the road.

Nothing against people wearing a helmet, and I would still do so 99% of the time. I just don't think it should be compulsory.

All the best

I'd always wear a helmet when on a motorbike, my OGK saved me from a broken jaw and mashed face when I hit a wall.

Even if there was an option, I'd always wear proper safety gear.

Push bike wise, no I don't wear one, I used to when I raced but that was years ago. If I ever ride one these days I don't wear a helmet and have successfully flipped over the bars, hit trees, fallen down ditches and various other things without hurting myself too badly Laughing

No because I can't afford it one ! Laughing

Have been riding every day for two years now mostly on the road and haven't fallen off once yet (touch wood) I guess it would be alot safer with one, but for some reason I just cant be bothered Confused

I used to wear one a lot of years ago until I realised I looked like a mushroom head.
