..rear left side engine mount on the hooner - there's a big alloy casting stopping me getting a socket on the bugger. The alloy casting looks like it's got the swingarm mounted through it, there's a dirty great nut in the middle of it. I've found the manual and it says 'loosen the swingarm mount and move to one side..) but even the bravest soldier might want his hand holding when undoing a swingarm mount....

So, is the bike going to fall in half, with the rear suspension spring launching into orbit through my right eyeball if I try to loosen this casting?

As far as the rear suspension goes,if you have the rear wheel off the floor the spring wont do anything when you remove the swing arm....

The shocker is what stops the swing arm going any lower (when the bike is supported under the engine e.t.c.) so if you wanted to take the shocker off you could just unbolt it.

So no,it's not going to spring out into your face Laughing

As far as I remember you don't open the swing arm nut just the other ones and you should be able to move it a bit to get it out of the way.

Paddy.

Yeah, but the suspension will still have some compression about it to hold it in place. Besides that it's gonna be on a paddock stand and therefore as good as on the wheel....

Has anyone actually done this on a Hooner before?

Fair enough if your using a paddock stand.
But if the rear wheel was off the floor then that's as far as the travel on the shock would go (the actual spring would still be under compression, but the spring is held in the confines of the shock) so you could unbolt the shock there and then and all that would fall is the swing arm uner it's own weight....

Done it on my rs125, the suspension doesn't really have much kick unless of course there is load on it in which case it will be compressed down!

I'm not entirely sure if you want the suspension off, or just the swingarm bolt out... but either way make sure then bike is well supported because it will likely split and drop in the middle. I suspended the RS from the roof though, so the issue didn't really arise for me.
