PostPosted: 11:14 - 29 Jul 2008    Post subject: Removing fork stanctions? Reply with quote

I have some dtr forks in the garage that i thought id have a mess about with.
Undone the big allen bolt on the bottom, removed the nut on the top and emptyed the oil and spring.
Put the leg in the vice and tryed pulling the stanction out but it wont budge?

I know it can sometimes take quite a bit of work to pull them out but it's really not budging?

Any advice?

Maybe a little bit of heat around the leg in the area of the seal might help?

Thats what i had to do to get the bottom allen bolt out?

Hi

You might need some heat, but I would try a lot more effort yanking it apart first. Effectively the top bush has to push the seal out, and the seal is likely fairly well stuck in.

All the best

Keith

Also,if i pull the stanction as far is it will go,it feels springy?like theres a spring holding it in?

The allen bolt on the bottom that i undone wouldn't actually come out,but i undone it as much as i could?

Thanks
Just not sure how much effort it should need?
I mean i must have pulled it as hard as i can about 30+ times and it's not budging in the slightest?

Hi

The bolt should come out. It screws into the bottom of the damper rod, so with it still in place the forks will not seperate. You need to stop the damper rod turning to remove the bolt (often the force of the fork spring pushing on the damper rod will stop it spinning).

On some forks there is a small spring between the damper rod and the fork tube. That might be what you can feel.

All the best

Keith

Sounds like that's the problem then.
I tryed compressing the fork then undoing the allen bolt but it was still just turning!
Any other options i have of removing it?

Thanks
Dave

Hi

Officially a long socket of the appropriate size to reach the damper rod.

Unofficially a broom handle pushed hard up the inside of the fork to stop the damper rod spinning.

All the best

Keith
