Hello,

I can now get my bike to run in neutral ( thank god ) but as soon as i knock it into first gear it wasn't to stall straight away, i think it may be running rich but the garage has just cleaned my carb so won't be that?

Any ideas?

If it just wants to stall but doesn't then I suspect it's the clutch dragging.

If it does instantly stall it's the sidestand switch.

It sounds like the first thing, there are 2 possible reasons. 1 is a badly adjusted cable the other is that it's been sat for a long time and the plates are a bit sticky and the oil might be really thick and scummy.

First thing to do is feel the clutch lever. If you can pull the clutch some of the way with no resistance at all i.e it's just taking up slack then you need to adjust out the slack.

Sorry, it does actually stall mate.

So if i get it to start in nuetral take the choke off it might run ok. Then i cluch in and select first and it just wants to stall i can fight it by reving but as soon as i stop it will stall

Your also right as it's sat for about a month + and not been ridden much at all due to the problems i've had with it.

So could that be the side stand switch?

Yup almost certainly. Follow the wire back to the connector. Cut it off and just join the wires together.

Or as a temporary test measure, just bridge the contacts in the connector and see if that does it.

If reving it keeps the engine going then it aint the side stand switch. That will kill it straight away, like hitting kill switch.

Put the bike on c/s when you put it in gear does the rear wheel start spinning with the engine running.
Mind you you should feel it trying to move forward anyway.... If its enough to stall the bike.
Could be the clutch has got gummed up and needs freeing off, or just the cable needs adjusting.

So you mean if i put it in first with the clutch in - does the bike roll forward? I've felt it do it before not sure if it's does now i'll go try it and see. I don't have a centre stand so can't really check it that way.

i know but how do i actually do that. Does it need loosened or tightened at the leaver? If i take the bolt to the end of the threads then the clutch gets tight but i think it still stalls.

Sorry, yes i am a noob Rolling Eyes

What you need it to do is pull the lever on the engine end further in. So have a look at that and try adjusting it.
Can be done from both ends.

A lot easier to do than explain.

I suggested it was the sidestand switch because let's face it, this guy isn't a mechanic.

And he might be thinking that revving the bike is keeping it going even if it's the sidestand switch. I was just going for the most likely thing.

But now I guess it's the clutch.

In that photo you need to unscrew the thing, i.e turn it anti-clockwise. And no it won't be easy, because there'll be a bit of pressure on it from the clutch.

Or unscrew the adjuster that's on the lever. This effectively makes the cable shorter.

Even on a bike with a decently working clutch, the rear wheel will still spin with the clutch pulled in.

I'll try again tomorrow with the bolt.

I've taken a video so you have an idea of what it does and can perhaps help if it is the side stand or not.

But as i said i can catch the revs before it stalls and rev away but as soon as i let go of the throttle it will stall.[/url]

I couldn't be bothered to watch the vid, but if you can keep the engine running longer than 0.1s after going into gear it's not the side stand switch.

I'd guess it's clutch. If you want to get a bit more slack on the adjuster find what the cable moves. Normally it's an arm, grab the arm with a big pair of pliers and move it manually. This should give a load of slack on the cable and make it easier to adjust.

Yea i can move the arm I'll give it a go tomorrow got an early start tomorrow.

I can only move the nuts with my fingers as it's to tight to get an adjustable spanner or anything to turn.

Cheers again

Gah, never use an adjustable spanner again.

Get a set of spanners. Even cheap ones are better than an adjustable.
