Suzuki SV Vs Kawasaki ER6n

Hey guys,

Got my A2 test at the end of August and i have been looking forward to getting an SV. Recently i've been told to look at some ER6n's and i quite like them. They don't look as bike as a fully faired (pointy) SV but i've been told they are fun on country roads and handle well. They are both Vtwins as far as i'm aware, so i was just wondering what you think of them and if any of you own either of them ( now like the ER6/F aswell )

er... the er6n is a parallel twin not a v , i've no ridden either but i'd take a er6f ( the nicer one) over an Sv anyday

quick breakdown of twins

V-twins: L shaped, can be either inline with the frame (SV or ducati) or across it ( moto guzzi)

Parallel twin: two cylinders next to each other (basically two singles bolted to each other) like half an inline four (er6n/f , old British bikes)

oppositional twins: the bmw boxer engine config.

Passed my A2 recently and swapped my 125 for a restricted ER6F.

Had it about a month and it's a great bike. Even restricted, it's still a big jump in power.

Can't say I've ridden anything else apart from my 125 to compare it to. However, it's sweet to ride (I did 60 easy miles down the M6 just this morning) great on the A/B roads and using for commuting everyday.

Had lots of nice comments from friends and colleagues too.

Ive owned an SV650 last year - Nice learner bike.

My partner just past her test and brought an ER6 - I am, lucky enough to be insured to ride it (She must be insane)
I didnt think much of this bike, as its pretty slim, Knees around the tank makes it feel like a 125 ( I ride a Ninja 636)
But, compared between both bikes??

ER6 any day.

It has a lot of torque lower end. Sounds nice, and has no trouble taking 2 up - at all.

She took me on the back and did 50mph and im 12 stone

I then took over and did just over 90ish, with no problem at all at the same weight ratio.
With the SV I found it to struggle with a pillion.

With my SV I found it to be quiet cramped (5'11) and after 30 or so mins i would have to stretch out.
Its all down to do with personal opinion but with me, after riding both the ER6 wins.

Louise - thanks for the reply. When i first looked at the er6 that was the first thing that i though - they looked pretty small. But i guess that would make it feel better when cornering as my little NSR is pretty fun to corner in atm. Good to know it's good at carring pillions aswell.

I have a 2002 SV650S ("curvy" model). It's great fun, with enough power up until 80-90mph. After that it's not very quick, but how often do you need to go faster than that?
As with all SV650s, it's built to a budget and is subject to some surface rusting if used year round. That said, the ER6 is also built to a similar budget!

Very similar bikes, and at the end of the day I'd say the choice will be down to your personal preference in terms of riding position, cost, looks etc.
I know you've specified the ER6N, but note that the ER6F also has an upright bar position, whereas the SV650"S" has low clip-ons. ER6F/N's are also on 0% finance at the moment if you are considering new...

Yea, i actually really like the new Er6/f im not sure what colour but they are very nice, however the deal on 0% for 30months ends today lol.

I've emailed them asking if they are going to extend it as i really like them now

I have an er6f, although the sv is an obvious choice i never really thought about it as i aren't that keen on how it looks.

Mine is 33bhp, quick enough, gets up to 70 fairly quickly. Infact i was going nearly 90 in 4th the other day in no time at all and didn't even realise i was doing it.

Its comfy, literally runs off fresh air, excellent handling and it's quite easy to haggle the dealers for an awesome price if buying new (plus 0% ftw).

I enjoy regularly playing the petrol station game (as mentioned on top gear), i wait until the light comes on and display flashes fuel at me and i try and reach the next station before filling up, i repeat until at a cheap enough petrol station (aka tesco). Ive not lost yet.

I've got an ER-6N that's been restricted but is now "restricted", it's got a lot of torque compared to the SV. One of my riding mates has an SV and it's not as torquey, it's much smoother i found although some people can't tell the difference.

I take pillions literally every single week, ranging from 8 stone right up to about 13-14 stone and it takes it no problem. You don't feel squashed against the tank and theres plenty of room for 2, you could easily get a good 80-85 with a pillion.

Onto the handling, well i've got maxxis tyres on mine at the moment and although their not the best the bike handles great! The rear is a bit bouncy but i havn't adjusted the pre-load yet so once thats sorted it'll be much sharper. You can really attack corners and just keep leaning over and the bike eats them up with ease, if you sit in the higher gears (lets use 5th as an example) then it still has more than enough power to accelerate out the corner extremely fast.

Hurricanehollis - I think i would have it resitricted for a few months at least till i got used to it ( Is it done with the ecu or washers? )

Great to hear about the good handling i was liking the n at first but now i think i prefer the f posted in the link above. My work commute would be about 45min or so do you find them comfy enough without having to upgrade the seat or anything? I also would use it for fun on the weekends and weekdays of course (atm i'm a fair weather rider as not sure how an NSR would cope in the wet)

I ended up buying an er6 last year after looking a few other bikes aswell including the SV's. I am very happy with my choice and do not have any regrets, she is ideal for the commute (filtering, motorway etc in all weather) and also good fun up brecon on weekends.

Kawasaki do have a good finance offer and this did help persuade me. Also being only 5,7 the bike felt right compared to others. The ride is smooth and I never have problems keeping up with other bikes etc.

As previously mentioned I have carried 5-6 diif ppl on back and never had any issues. I even had a police friend on back (6,2 - 17stone - me12 stone) and she happily got to over 100mph before I realised and rolled off power.

Really set on the Er6f now - hopefully i can find one on 0% as i can't really find any nice second hand F's - just got to pass my test.

Only thing for me is i'm about 5,11 in height perhaps 6ft do you think the big will be a little small for me?

Even with the restrictor, ER6 v quick to 70 MPH - not wound it up to maximum, but since only passed test 6 weeks ago trying not to ride like I'm Captain Scarlett.

Sizewise, go and sit on one at a dealership - I'm about 5'8 on a good day - at first thought it was a bit tippytoe compared to the 125 (790mm seat height to 700mm) but after a month feel it fits just right. You may feel a bit cramped though once on the move - maybe ring around and see if dealer has a demonstrator you can go out on?

Have to comment on the handling - the more confident I get the more I find I can just throw it into corners and come out the other side wearing a great big grin.

Incidentally, I've just put mirror extenders on - if you've read elsewhere that the standard mirrors don't allow you to see sh*t , it's completely true. So unless you're supermodel thin I'd get extensions put on straight away - maybe haggle them into a deal if buying from a dealer?

I'm 5'10/5'11 and the bike isn't small in any way, about the perfect size actually.

You can restrict by either ECU or washers but as it's fuel injected expect a hefty labour bill if you go down the washer route. I opted for a throttle stop as it's quick and easy to put on aswell as take off, it's only good for short term though. If your planning on having the restrictors in for a year or more then fork out a bit more and get the ECU done (or get washers).

The seat is extremely comfortable, i have been all the way to aylesbury and back (About a 100 mile round trip) without stopping and was fine. Pillion seat is also supposedly comfortable from what my mates have said. Great bike for commuting as it's got high MPG but it also performs well and keeps up with any other bike of it's class on the weekend blasts (expect the MPG to drop though )

Now i've got to try and find one on 0% finance over the 30 months and i'm pretty sure i'll buy one ( might even get it before my test date - more pressure on passing then )

Overall, great bike. My only criticism of the bike is the seat wasn't comfortable for me over longer journeys (more than 30 minutes). I bought a custom seat which has helped but it's not perfect..

Na thanks but i do still like the pointy fully faired SV the sportier riding position appeals to me not sure the vtwin will or not.

The Er6f, also looks nice and i think i would like the parallel twin better. It also offers much better mpg than the SV and 0% finance on a new one atm.

Grrr hard decision.

Just a bit of advice clone, remember that on 0% finance if you crash and write the bike off (whether it's your fault or not) you are still left paying for the bike even though it's not on the road. Therefore leaving you without any money to buy a new one (depending on your financial situation obviously).

It's the reason why i went down the second hand route in the end, and it's lucky i did as i crashed my bike a week after i got it .

Where abouts do you live? if your close i could always pop over and you can have a little ride on mine.
