The English "pirate" is derived from the Latin term pirata, and ultimately from Greek peira (πεῖρα) "attempt, experience", implicitly "to find luck on the sea". Wink

Arrrrrr, but do you know why pirates wear eye patches?

So that when they go below deck where there's little light, they can swap which eye the patch is covering which means that the eye which was covered will have night vision without having to wait a few minutes for it to adjust.
