Hi all, im sure this has been asked before the search is not working at the moment and my CBT is tomorrow.

The thing is with little bike experience my mates think i will fail my CBT tomorrow. I have always said you cant fail etc Its there to teach new bikers the rules of the road and its not a test, but can you actually get told you cannot ride a bike etc, you've not passed.

Will sound daft to you A2 etc riders but this's got me worried Laughing Rolling Eyes

Anyone ?

You can't fail as such. You can not be given a CBT certificate at the end of the day if your riding isn't up to scratch.

Assuming you can ride a (push)bike and you have a bit of an idea how the roads work then you'd have to try quite hard not to pass.

Most places say that people who don't pass can come back for free another time for more training/practise so you don't get told you cannot ride a bike, just that you need to be better before being allowed out on the roads on your own.

It's easy. Thumbs Up

I managed to "avoid passing". Going to take the CBT again when I've moved home and settled in. Not going back to the same training centre because they were going to charge me again, and if I'm going to pay I may as well pay someone else for a bit of variety.

Most people i know didnt 'pass' their CBT first day. I guess it depends on who your with and how much you can cover in a day. I did mine with one other guy, we had both previously ridden illegally to a carpark to practise clutch control and low speed riding.

The goal of a CBT is to get the basics of riding to a level where you don't have to think about doing it, freeing your mind to think about indicating, mirrors, shoulder checks etc.

when i did mine i hadn't ridden a bike before. i didn't finish on the first day but that was fine. you continue trying until you complete the course. it's training and not a test. it's in their interest to pass you first time but a sincere company will have struggling riders come back to gain more experience so they don't kill themselves Thumbs Up

don't get frustrated if you have to go back another day, it's just more time to get used to riding without the risk of damaging your own bike Wink

Don't worry Vesta it's just nerves before the CBT, i was exactly the same! Never ridden a bike in my life, went to do my CBT, i luckily enough finished it in 1 day so was happy with that, although i did book another 3 hours worth of lessons for the week after it so that i had a little more training before thinking i was awesome and going out on my own when i knew 1 day wasn't enough Very Happy

Thanks for all the kind words, just to let you know i Sailed through the CBT without error. Only thing i did wrong was occasionly leave my indicators on Embarassed

Nearly came off aswell, but this was not my fault. Coming into a junction there was some loose gravel on a road which i didn't see, and the front wheel went and i immediatly pulled the back brake, kicked the ground and managed to stabalise myself. As i turned around to see the instructors opinion on this little spill as i was at the front i saw a experienced rider of 4 years do the exact same but they decked it and there own 125 Scooter came tumbling on them.

Took ages tho, got there at 8 30 finished about 5 30.. Feels good to be on the road tho.

My instructor mates regularly comment that a day isn't enough for the CBT. It's a helluva lot to take in for a lot of people.

Well done on having no problems, I'd have a word with your mates if I were you for having no faith!! Very Happy

Indeed, reading up on the Highway Code is really helpful before the CBT as is having a look through https://www.begin-motorcycling.co.uk/cbt.htm. Having road experience on a bicycle beforehand helped me immensely. All I had to worry about really was getting used to a motorbike. Was still a lot to take in even after all the preparation.

Did the same thing the other week turning onto a dual carraigeway,
Front started to slip sat up to stop that, leant again to make the turn and the back went so had to sit up again, ended up about 2 foot off the central reservation, and that was at about 25mph

Frustrating thing was i saw the loose chippings, first time i had expereienced them on a bike, needless to say they effect a bike a lot more than a car. Smile
Luckily i had space to keep it upright without too many problems

Don't worry, I dropped the bike twice on my CBT and did the same thing with my indicators too, but it's a bad habit to start. My instructor told me 'whenever you come out of a corner, CAC yourself: Cancel indicators, Accelerate, Check mirrors.'

After that I had no trouble.

its not a fail as such, but the instructors are just looking for confindence and a good level of progression and awareness on the road. they like to call it "not up to standard" instead of a fail.

If it's ANY consolation, a mates father is an instructor, and was out with someone on a CBT. They decided to stop for lunch, rode into a carpark, and the mates father forgot to put his feet down. The bike toppled, ended up side down on top of his leg & everyone took the mickey. Funnily enough, the lad on his CBT rode wonderfully afterwards Very Happy

I agree it's very very difficult to fail the CBT but I don;t agree with the general consensus that it's not a test. It's a test in everything but name. Test whether you are roadworthy, capable and safe to ride on the rode...sounds like a test to me...either you're competent or not (pass or fail) Twisted Evil It's just a test with very slack pass marks Very Happy

I knew someone who went round a roundabout the wrong way and just had to come back to do another morning of training. I did my c.b.t on a manual and had never ever ridden a manual bike before (got a manual car but..) it was totally cool even though my slow maneuvers was so awful in my opinion I wouldnt have let me out on the roads but whey I did it. Yum! That was my second C.B.T first one ran out of date.

i know one girl who got lost on her road part. then ran out of fuel, called the test centre from a payphone and had to get them to collect her. still passed amazingly as she's a terrible car driver Laughing
on my cbt i was told of one guy who was so bad they took him off the bike and told him to walk back. i was ok on my cbt but got told off for showing off by telling the instructor to cancel it's indicators Cool

When doing my CBT I was told of a kid who when asked what the most important legal requirement is gearwise, he said 'the motorbike'. I think the instructor just told him to go home!
