Ello. Bit of an odd one this - not on my behalf, but that of a friend:

He has a Big Plan for a holiday in the next 18 months or so. He and some friends intend to fly to India, all buy Enfield Bullets, and ride back to the UK.
Now, leaving aside the "learning curve" concept (he's not planned to do any training before leaving the UK, holds a car license only, and I don't believe he's ever even sat on a motorcycle), does anyone have and advice on the legalistic and logistical pitfalls that may apply to this venture?

Off the top of my head I considered he may need an EU motorcycle license once he hits the European border, and I have absolutely no idea how he'd go about getting suitable international insurance for a foreign machine once there.

Anyone got any thoughts, or is this much ado about nothing?

He'll need a motorcycle licence that's valid in every country he intends to ride through obviously. He'll also need to gain insurance for the bike to cover Europe but more difficult will be obtaining insurance to cover it while travelling through India and Pakistan/Russia, depending on route.

Then there's the paperwork side of buying a bike in India and registering it somehow, or proving ownership without being able to register it to his UK address. He needs to do some proper research, sounds like a half baked idea to me.

It doesn't sound like a great idea to me but then that's just my opinion. You're probably better off having a look on forum called Horizon Unlimited the people there will have a better idea about what you need to do. Wouldn't it be easier to learn how to ride here and then get a bike over there. I understand that driving over there can be a bit manic just to give an idea would you drive here after just passing your bike test?

As the last guy said its best to have a look on Horizons unlimited as l,ve heard there been a change of rules in India for forginers owning Indian registered bikes.

biggest issue for that sort of trip is getting visa,s for Iran and the unreliability of the enfield bullet thought they are easy to fix.

Heres a guy who did a trip from India to Austria on a bullet
