Flashing Warning Signs...

I noticed today that in my village, on the 30mph signs that flash if you are going too fast, have seperate little black boxes on the lampost.

The black box hasn't got any lenses or anything in it. and is padlocked, so im wondering if its electrics?

I was wondering if anybody knew what these are for, is it a sign that they are going to put speed camera's up?

There are 3 of these signs in the village and all have these boxes on the lampost.


Note: Before there was just the flashing signs there, there has been for about 3 years. The black box im talking about is a recent addition.

I think it's just a very basic speed sensor that flash's up when you pass. it doesn't log anything.

We have a few and their not speed cameras, they are usually a sensor so if your going over 30 the sign will flash. Theres one i go past to college and it flashes how fast your going, it's a good challenge to see how fast you can go past it to see how high it reads

They don't flash if you're going to fast, they flash if you're going too slowly. Nothing to do with speed cameras or anything like that.

Just like the signs which flash up your speed, you're meant to try and go as fast as possible.

What way do they face? If it's forward facing it won't matter anyway as we don't have numberplates on the front

Research has shown that people are far more likely if something reacts to their excessive speed, to be honest it works for me.

I love the signs that flash up your actual speed when you go past. They are only 2 digits and appear blank if your going tripple figure speeds

i read what was on a box like the one you say around here, all it does is somehow count the amount of traffic going past.

yeah theres one near me at a old primary school. Before i never used to speed near there cos the box was only turned on at school times and i might of hit a kid.
But now the school is closed and for some reason it still turns on at school times, i set a goal lmao.

The black box might record how many people speed there and how many dont. This may be because there thinking of putting a gatso there.

Counts the times activated against the number of cars.
It will feed the info back to the police/council who will then make a decision on whether its cost effective to install a cam

They had one of those where I live (Richmond) on the A316.
It has the dot display that shows your speed, but it also has another black rectangular display on the top which shows the number plate of the car been checked.
It proves that number plate recognition has evolved, but it does work 8)

I once encountered one on the A57 somewhere between Worksop and Lincoln warning of a junction on the right hidden by trees. I knew the junction was there but this sign which seemed to jump out at me shitted me up so much it felt like a hazard itself!
This one didn't show your speed it was just like a high contrast hazard sign, i can't have been doing more than about 50.
