Looking to 'upgrade' the SV sometime soon for an IL4 600, i.e. Gixxer, CBR etc. My budget is smallish, so would be looking at around year 2000 (so from 1998 to 2001 probably). What should I look for, for example 'x got updated brakes in year y'. Don't really know much about sporty 600's, so any other reccomendations/opinions would be good.

Cheers Thumbs Up

CBR600s Changed in 1999 to the FX model which has an ally frame better suspension, and we0nt to FI in 2001, it got non adjustable forks in 2005 though, its swing arm is also a tad longer (as I put a FI swing arm on my FX and put them side to side its 4mm longer). CBR600F didn;t change until it was discontinued pretty much othr than FI and the non adjustable forks.

Limited edition FS twin head lamp split seat which is identical to the stock CBR600F , but with a black frame and black swing arm, ridden one back to back with my CBR can't tell any difference.

ZX6R at the J1 model got twin headlamps , I think 200-01 then went to J2 which is identical then went to A1P which was the first 636.

GSXR600 , not too clear about this but the 1999 model got + 13 BHP a bit leap , it started to get smaller after 2003/4 as its a fairly big bike.

I know nothing about R6s , other than they have had a gear box issue on the early ones.

Oh yeah back on topic, had a 99 R6 which was great took a fair bit of abuse. Decided it didnt like 2nd gear anymore at around 20k miles and stood up to a high speed slide fairly well..

First big bike and i look back at it fondly, cant go too far wrong with a decent early R6

edit..and it spat a spark plug out of the cylinder, other than that...

info about the r6's, and generally every bike you plan on buying.

FIND OUT EXACTLY WHAT STOCK COLOUR SCHEMES THERE ARE. a few hours on the web should do this, and if the bike you have has a mix and match of different colour schemes walk away. any scratches on frame or swingarm (deep scratches) walk away. try and go for a stcok bike it usually means it hasnt been thrashed. full service history is a must. if its a young bloke thats ridden it, walk away. find out if the bloke posts on the internet, look on forums for the bike, it might have been in a crash. if you can hear a tick or nock when it starts up, walk away, insist he starts it up from cold, and allow it to warm up while your there, and check for any strange noises.
get a test ride or get on the pillion seat. On an r6 tell him to change from first to second at high rpm, if he says no, walk away. check from scratches and dents on the wheels and forks.
try and have a nose to see if theres any rounded off bolts or if theyve been on and off a lot.
if the tyres/ chain/ sprocket, is bolloxed, knock him down on the price.
99-02 r6's, 03-05 cbr 600rr are the most track focoused, the 03-05 r6 is very road friendly. b1h ninjas are the best bike to buy, but spares arent easy to get. the gixxers are a happy medium as is the 636 but the 636 is better.

at the end of the day mate, theyre all roughly the same, dont pick the 99-02 r6 of early cber unless you want to rev the bollocks off it everywhere, but you need to rev the shit out of 6 to go anywhere no matter what 6 you choose... not much difference really.
