Newbie riders - your opinions....

I'm a bit of a newbie both to these boards and biking in general, so feel free to blast me out of the water . Anyway, I always wonder as I pass big fat hogs and superbikes, how ye olde bikers really feel about us just passed our tests - or even *shudder* riding with L plates lot.

Are we the reckless bain of your lifes, or do you find it encouraging seeing newbie riders?

Personally, I feel really intimidated by those riding noise-makers - especially if i'm queing by one, or being followed. And going the other way, I rage over twist and go kiddies on their "fo*k-in' mo-peds mate" (townie talk).

What do you reckon?

I'm a newish rider myself, I'll respect anyone on the road, except moped riders with their trousers tucked into their socks and their shiny white trainers, just waiting until they are old enough to get a Nova.

If I saw one crash badly, yeah I'd stop to help, but that'll probably be as far as it goes!

Everyone has to start somewhere. I'm a new rider too and I'm purposely riding by myself for the first few months to get used to it and build up my own confidence.

I have a couple of mates who have bikes and they are keen for me to ride with them, but I know that I need more experience myself anyway. They would be good though as they know me and wouldn't do anything I didn't want to do (I hope! )

I'm with Mr C on this. If someone has a beef with someone being a new rider, then its their problem. I'm all for being shot down in flames on a forum - that's part of the fun! - but not actually on the road. There's no need for it. There's plenty of other people out to get bikers as it is, without other bikers joining in.

Just my tuppence worth. Not that its worth much, as I'm a newbie!

To be honest, bikers round here are treating me a lot better than I expected, making me feel nice and a welcome addition to the team . Beats car driving anyday (and i haven't even tried that because it's crappy ).

Generally I feel that the older rider's give me a bit more confidence. Especially when I started to learn to filter through traffic, I wasn’t exactly shore with what I could get away with.

Makes me a bit nervous when there behind me, because I have been overtaken twice while overtaking somebody else

i've been bikeing a year and a bit and have had my licence for about 4/5 months... so its easy for me to cast my mind back to siting on my cg125... The engine shaking and sounding like its going to launch itself out of the frame and still only pushing 45 up a hill on a 60 limit (good fun it was )
Any biker that hasn't got time for learners (unless they are clearly a prat) is not worth paying any attention to, i always give a friendly nod to any oncoming biker.. be they ridding a 1200cc beast or a c90.*
As for big bikes looking intimidating, its difficult not to i guess, modern bikes are big loud and aggressive looking**, theres no need to overtake leaving 5cm space tho :p
If i'm ever behind a 125 i'm generally thinking "gawd, I remember how much hard work learning was..."

All in all its great to see so many people takeing up biking, provided they are doing it properly and not pushing the biker stereo type the wrong way.

**I saw an article somewhere and a VERY significant percentage of old people are very scared when they see a biker in their mirror, 99.9% of us are just minding our own business not trying to scare o.a.p.s (Though I think we have more to be frightened of)

We were all newbies once. On the busy roads in London I often find myself filtering in convoy with a few other bikes, some are with Learner plates.

I find most learners will pull over and let us go. I normally give them a friendly wave. I still pull over for the courier boys who usually take their life in their hands and filter between two lanes of cars at 40-50mph!

There people out there who show no respect if you are going, in their view, too slow. Don't be panicked by them and if you have an appropriate opportunity pull over, but not before!
