Kim Sengupta
The Independent
August 6, 2008 Idiots and there stupid fucking toys.

The Government is drawing up plans to use unmanned “drone” aircraft currently deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan to counter terrorism and aid police operations in Britain.

The MoD is carrying out research and development to enable the spy planes, which are equipped with highly sophisticated monitoring equipment that allows them to secretly track and photograph suspects without their knowledge, to be deployed within three years.

The plans have been backed by the House of Commons Defence Committee but have attracted criticism from civil liberties campaigners concerned about the implications of covert surveillance of civilians.

This is not a new idea, it has been mooted round Westminster for many years. They Defence Dept. has spent rather a large sum of Taxpayers money developing UAV's for Military use and it was only a matter of time before the Home Office got it's dirty little hands on them.

And in a recent poll conducted on this forum, at least 50% of you would vote for a government who would introduce the use of drones or UAV's. Fvcking crazy!

what is going on with this country, we get watched far too much as it is and it still doesnt sort out the trouble. when will the government realise that throwing money at a problem wont solve it. i hate cctv and being watched all the time. i have nothing to hide its just the principle of someone watching me whenever i go out.

I'm having visions of little flying drones following you everywhere and floating outside windows like Half Life or something, might be fun shooting them down.

it sounds like a nice cheap alternative to full size helicopters with expensively trained pilots

bonus is the robot spy planes cant be blinded by little scrotes with laser pens

The government already know that. Please understand they are not trying to solve any problems, they are creating them.
When will you folks understand that the government are killing your souls. Think about it.

Thing is while UAV's are a good tech, they aren't that advanced still. They have a relatively short flight time and only really work in good conditions.

Basically they are model air craft with basic AI, and I don't know if anyone here flies model planes but they are harder to fly if its raining/windy compared to a sunny calm day.

In places like Iraq where weather is usually hot and I'm guessing not massively windy all the time, easy enough to fly around. In British weather conditions.. it'd be very difficult for it.

Its just creepy.

Probably last as long as it takes for one to fall out of the sky and kill someone.

Thumbs Up

Here's an idea: get a magnetron from a microwave, build a rudimentary waveguide, and blast the fucking things out of the sky.

This is, seriously, scary though.

No you have it wrong , they don't mean UAVs like you give to the grunts , they mean more like darkstar or the global hawk the ones which sit at 50,000ft.

Those things can loiter all day , carry hellfires and they fly so high you can't see them with the naked eye, this is what has been tried in Iraq, (darkstar was canned though).

Interesting if they were to use them.. but all the same they'd only be any real use on a sunny day, clouds/fog etc they are useless.

Yeah but bikers tend to go out on sunny days though ....

Anyway the inherent power isn't in the technology, it is the fact that you don't know IF you are being watched or not, like the telescreens in 1984 they were two way and you didn't know if you were being watched or not.

This causes a psychological conditioning to act differently, ie are you willing to take the off chance that a gestapo officer is looking through your telescreen?.

As with the paranoia thread it stresses people in that they ride differently and act differently to if there were no hidden cop cars or cameras.

All in all though it could be beneficial in ways, it just depends on how (and if (a bloody big if at that)) they use them.

If they used them to get speeding motorists.. would be a total farce, and to be honest wouldn't be the simplest thing in the world to do.

If they were putting tabs on a suspected pedofile or similar with it, would be a good use of the technology.

And to be honest the general feeling of there won't be any cops around I can get away with it, is a dangerous one that causes loads of problems.. I know I probably wouldn't have done half the stupid stuff I've done (and I'm not just talking motorbikes here) if I thought there was a chance of getting caught, but cause I knew there was very little risk of getting caught I just went off and did it anyway..

I was talking to my Dad about how people obey the laws less because they know there is little chance of getting caught. They could use stuff like this to chase someone who's just shot someone and so on.

But sadly it won't be used for good things such as that.. It'd be used to spy on your every day person to get them for petty crimes, cause sadly that's where the money is to be made..

Darkstar wasn't canned. It was "Classified" You can be assured that it is in use somewhere or is being scaled up to a full size remote stealth UCAV.

I doubt that the police have much use for something that sits at 50,000 feet and fires hellfires.

Its going to be for surveillance at low altitude for a similar role as police helicopters.

Its not going to be a military budget super -deluxe one.
