Really pissing me off now this is.

Had my new tyre fitted about 150 miles ago (old one was a 150 instead of a 130).
The old tyre had quite big strips, which i put down to the tyre being too big,but now i still have them?

I followed my uncle who has no chicken strips at all,and matched his speed into every corner (at times a little way past my comfort zone) and yet the strips are still there Confused .
What am i doing wrong now?

The rear tyre is a 130/80/17---- front is 110/70/17 will that make any difference?

Question Question Question

I know it shouldn't matter anyway, but when at meets and things it does matter,it's embarrasing Embarassed ..help

Dont forget it takes a while to wear then down. The few secs you spend on the outer edge while lent over will not wear it much.

Could also be you are hanging off the bike more than your uncle.

Just forget about them... Rolling Eyes

IMO you're going wrong when you're following your uncle and matching his speed into every corner and going past your comfort zone.

If you really are that bothered about it then get someone to take some photos or video of you cornering. You can then see what you're doing wrong, or you can post the pics up on here and others will be able to say what you're doing wrong.

These big chicken strips; how big are they? What bike are you on and what tyres have you got?

By the looks of your avatar you are on a CB500?

I doubt they have enough physical ground clearance to completely rid your chicken strips.

I would just forget about them matey. Your gonna crash if you keep pushing it to get rid of a couple of fanny lines that nobody reallycares about.

If it was a gixxer thou, or a Brand new blade. Then I can understand. Because you would get called a poser etc. Who has all the gear and no idea.

You are riding a CB500 mate. Its a Commuter bike.

As i was aware different compounds/makes show and keep strips better than others.

see your rear is the same as mine, at least thats what i remember it being and i have feck all, mines out on the very edge, where i dont want to go kneedown on a high sm styled bike Laughing keep at it chap.

The first cb5 closest to the camera, you can just see the rear tyre in this pic. BT45

The comment about crashing if i keep trying is the feeling i've been getting lately, but i have been that determined to get rid of them,i've been going out with all my gear on expecting to fall off trying.I am going a bit too far really.

Will try and get a mate to follow me on camera at my normal riding pace, see if you lot can give me some pointers Thumbs Up

I have BT45's on my bike, the chicken strips on the front are small, yet they are big on the rear. Inspection shows that my bike would need about a 70 degree lean angle to get on the edge of the tire, clearly impossible. This is because the tire has a hieght the same as its width.

A fast rider will take smooth lines which will result in less lean angle allowing them to go faster with less lean angle. If you want more lean angle take a wide line through every corner.

Well that could be my problem right there!

I allways take a racing line (be it on bike or in the car).

I see what you mean about the lean angle aswell,it looked like if i was to go right over the exhaust would bottom out,but i haven't actually had it bottom out yet...

I dont know any kiddy's on scooters. And certainly dont park up anywhere near them.

It's usually (suprisingly) older blokes who've been riding for many many years that mention it.
I know it's stupid, but it's something that's annoying me for whatever reason, which is why i'm on here getting advice about it.

TBH i'm REALLY suprised by the reaction i'm getting,i was expecting most on here (being generally a lot younger than me) to have a good laugh at the fact i have them, but the whole who cares attitude has made me feel a little childish that i'm even bothered about it.

Argh fuck it,i'll just calm it down and let time run it's course.

Thumbs Up

Buy some race scrubs, the edges are overheated and the rubber is shredded but the middles are like new. I had some for my VFR, they were sticky as snot and made the bike handle like a dream as it didnt want to be upright and was only happy at a 45degree lean angle Very Happy Plus if anyone checks out your chicken strips at a meet you look like a maniac and all your elbow down stories will be believable Wink

Hit a round about go reasonably slow but lean well over and do a few laps that will sort the right hand side but im fucked if i can come up with an answer for the left Confused mine just seem to go of their own accord after a couple of good blasts but mines a 12R and like the guys have said yours is not a bike that i would expect to see with no chicken strips due to it being an all rounder and not a sports bike so as said before take it easy before you take a spill and wait until you get a supersport before you start worrying about em Thumbs Up Mr. Green

Get rid of the bt45 and get bt014 you will feel more confident in the bike and will lean it over more. But take your time and don't push things to hard and if your out of your comfort zone stop and let the other guy go your only going to crash.

Mental attitude to biking is what's more important. If you think that your life on bikes is dictated by chicken strips then you'll need to adjust your attitude towards riding than your actual riding style.

Fair enough if you can get/scrub your chicken strips off. Some do so without even trying... if you confident enough with your riding and know where your limit is, THAT's more important than figuring how far into the sidewall you can bury into the tarmac. Confidence and smoothness are my principles to riding. If you can achieve that, everything can fall into place.

All chicken strips say is that "a guy really pushes his bike" and might not be a good indication of pace or riding skill - fact is, if you ride smooth and controlled, you'll have the bike more upright. I like hanging off LOADS to hold a comfortable line in a corner. Maintaining a quick, safe and steady and defensive line is my main priority when on the road.

Don't let it faze you.. concentrate on other aspects of your riding. Once you gain your inherent confidence, you'll get rid of them without trying! BT45's aren't particularly a good choice for achieving your goal.

I've got Maxxis tyres and my rear ones are near enough gone, i don't care about them it's just i lean into corners as thats my riding style. I hate hanging off. I'm not even fast at cornering so it doesn't mean/prove anything.

Newbie riders (and/or slower riders) are bothered about how much they can lean the bike and how small their chicken strips are, the smaller your chicken strips are the better rider you are.

People who're actually fast are more interested in keeping the bike as up as possible around corners since the more leant over your bike is, the smaller the footprint that's in contact with tarmac. Bike that's leant right over with a smaller footprint can put less power through the tyre, therefore the more upright you can keep your bike the more power you're able to put down which means going faster.

Misconceptions of expert newbies. Smile

It was never about getting rid of them for showing off sake.(if that's all i wanted i could have rubbed them off with wet&dry!
(although, there is a bit of image involved aswell)

What i've been thinking is that by having chicken strips i'm not cornering as fast as i should/could be.
Then seeing other peoples bikes not having them really had me thinking i was cornering wrong/riding too slow.

If i didn't have them ,then id be at a good riding standard.
I still feel like i'm far too slow going round the tighter bends and have very little confidence going round tight roundabouts, but i have loads of confidence cornering at high speeds (that probably sounds odd).
Maybe it's just the slower speeds that i'm not leaning enough on.

I thank everyone for their input, but i just dont see any way around this other than maybe paying for extra instructor training/or hope more time on the road will do it.
