I've heard that it does happen from time to time, but it should not affect the outcome. only thing is you might find your asked to pull over to wait a bit more often.

Guy followed me on my test in a kenning rental van.

Lost him three times.

From my perspective, this was great because they only have 40 minutes to find a reason to fail you. If you're out of sight for 10 of those 40 minutes then by my reckoning that's 25% less chance of them seeing a fault happen.

Yeah one of my tests were being followed in a car. I thought it would of been an advantage as it was near raining at the time therefore its harder for the examimer to see inside a car than on 2 wheels behind you. I still fialed it though Embarassed

On my test the examiner was in a car. It had mixed results. I got a minor for being hesitant at a junction. As he was three cars back he didn't see the car pulling up before the junction without indicators. BUT as i took a wrong turn down a cul d sac he didn't follow and see me realy struggle turning the bike round between cars.

My instructor seemed to think that it was a good thing.

If you make progress, he wont be able to keep as close an eye on you as he would on a bike.

It is very hard to keep a car and a bike together (if anyone has ever tried following a car in a car, you will know how easy it is to get split up in town) So the examiner may ask you to stop more often so he can catch up. Which means less time on the move and (as long as your proficent and stoping and moving away) less milage to conver.

Its a good thing as Stinkwheel says , it happened alot at Failsworth I recall, because the examiner was qualified to take both car and bike tests.

He'd get a few bike tests a few car tests and said it was too much hassle to change in and out of his bike gear + the DVLA paid him a sizable wedge to rent a car for this purpose.

If the examiner was in a car I wonder if he'd ignore you like most car drivers seem to.

my examiner followed in a car, I actually found it OK, in some ways it was like riding around on my 125 alone, so i was a bit more at ease.

My exaimner followed in a car as he had been expecting to just be doing car tests on my day.

I'm used to being followed by friends cars so it was no big deal.

Didnt know people testing had special excemptions to be able to write down whilst driving Laughing

This is related but also a little hijack.
if you say your making progress as in filtering and leave him right behind in a big traffic jam, what happens then? what if hes in traffic for just about the whole test?

Why would you ever want to filter in your test? Confused Just sitting and waiting in the traffic is so much safer, there's very little you could manage to fail on whilst in traffic, where as if you start filtering there's loads of things you could be marked down for.

It's one of the few times that sitting in traffic is a good thing. Mr. Green

Leave the examiner behind and he'll call over the radios telling you to pull over and wait for them to catch up.

I thought id heard of people failing before for not making good enough progress,
and thought that was needed to pass the showing you can filter?

the good enough progress would i think be more about getting up to the correct speed in a decent amount of time as well as not be to hesitant at juntions.

Yup, making progress is getting upto the appropriate speed for the road and not waiting at junctions when there's big enough gaps for you to pull out.

There's no need to show the examiner your filtering skills, as for the purpose of doing your test you're a 110% safe rider who'd never do anything that could be questionable. Wink

When not working for the DSA, the examiners riding style might be similar to LukeVFR's or they might be the biggest safety nazi ever who'll start crying if you filtered, you don't know so it's not worth risking it.

Filtering is a grey area, it's legal if done right however as Luke can point out even done carefully it is risky...

I want you keep in mind the examiner WILL fail you for passing vehicles if you leave less than a car doors width either side of you at the very least for the entire time you are riding.

Effectively you are expected to ride as if you were sat in the middle of an invisible car.

You will not be failed for choosing not to filter, however and if you are sat in traffic legally with waiting for your chance to proceed then it is burning test time - which means there is less time for you to make a critical mistake.

There is a difference between what the examiners believe is making progress and what they believe is risking your neck.

seems weird to have them follow you in a car.....

...the waiting for the car to catch up sounds like a blessing though.

i got stuck in traffic for a while on my car test....that was a bonus.

Depends, you might be tempted to do something when you think he's out of view, but can actually still see you!
