Who is he going to kill doing 73 on a dual carriage way?? If anything he was going a little slow (in my opinion).

Granted by law the lorry shouldn't go faster than 50, but in all honesty I think it is a stupid rule for motorway/dual carriageway vehicles and in my mind its dangerous.

Vehicle that's meant to be restricted, doing above the speed it should be capable of!! Could be about half the users on here. Laughing

66 year old guy with renal cancer and his wife is terminally ill, that'd have made headlines if he'd be sent to prison over a bit of speeding; 23mph over the limit and 12mph over the limit so he wasn't exactly breaking any land speed records. Rolling Eyes

Why should he go to jail for speeding??? Many murders/rapists/etc are getting out of going to jail cause its over crowed.. Yet you reckon an old cancer sufferer should be thrown to jail for going 3mph over the speed limit (yes I'm aware a lorry shouldn't do more than 50).

Amazing Rolling Eyes.

Who would benefit from him being in jail? His wife certainly wouldn't, as she'd probably have to be hospitalised earlier.

He's already lost his job, and who's going to employ a 65-year-old cancer sufferer with a terminally ill wife?

I don't think speeding, or trying to get away with it by his means, should be punishable by a custodial sentence either, certainly not as long as there are people walking free with just a fine having killed somebody in their cars.

Article states he has been disqualified, thus lost any driving job he might have had, so he wont be speeding for a while at least.

Banned, fined, and lost his ability to earn. Hardly got off scot free, think he has probably learnt his lesson.

You were annoyed that he didn't go to jail I suppose? Never broken the speed limit yourself of course?

Mobile phone users whilst driving should be the first in line for prison in my opinion, far more dangerous.

The idea of custodial sentences is not to benefit any one person. Its a punishment for a crime committed, and a deterrent to others thinking of committing that crime.

In my opinion, far more serious than going over the speed limit, is lorry drivers who drive more than their permitted hours.

Although there are safeguards to prevent this, there are ways round them.

I wouldnt want a lorry driver falling asleep at the wheel anywhere near me.

Jail was never an option for the speeding. It was however an option for attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Doubt he will ever drive again after his ban is up, what with fine, loss of job & ban I would say he will learn his lesson.

BTW got to ask why DHL lorries are capable of that speed, where are their limiters?

This is a non-story, good for stirring up bile but not much else. He was punished in line with his crime and some thought was given to his medical condition.

Only reason its been reported was because there was the oportunity to have 'cancer' and 'spared prison' in the same tag line. If he hadn't been ill, he would have went to jail for attempting to pervert etc etc etc, not for the speeding.

Is this not what we'd like to see more off from our legal system? Not just blind adherance to impersonal laws that don't take personal circumstances in to consideration?

Thumbs Up

have you ever seen the carnage a lorry can cause when it needs to brake sharply from 50 let alone 70?

Prison probably wasnt for speeding it was for peverting the course of justice twice i would assume.
