What do you do with the information that the rev counter tells you?

The only time I really use it is when my speedo has gone pear shaped and i would see how many revs and in what gear I'm in to estimate my speed. Other than that it is just a gimmick.

The purpose of a rev counter is to flick backwards and forward at long traffic lights to keep the rider entertained in the same manner as a cat with a dangling piece of string...

RS125 peak power is at 11,500rpm IIRC, not 12,500rpm

Have to say I use the tacho on my YR5 as due to various mods / expansion chambers it'll continue making good power well into the red, and well past what is safe for long term reliability on a stock crank. If I rode by feel (i.e. the power dropping off) then I'd be over stressing the engine constantly. Hence I ensure I sling another gear in as the needle creeps into the red.

You see I'd disagree - I would suggest that paying too much attention to a flicking dial, a mistake I've known more than one new rider to make, reduces the amount of attention they are giving the traffic around them.

One lad was so bad for it I convinced him to tape over his revcounter, after which his riding improved significantly.
