I am so pissed off right now. I can not BELIEVE the prices they take for cheapshit items. The clucth basket that I didn't end up getting they wanted 200+ euros for. Now looking at ebay I could get one on ebay, brand new, buy it now for 20 euro from italy! That's more than 10 times more that the fuckers are charging. I might just get one to be safe. 20 euros for brand new basket is a fucking steal
Sorry I just wanted to let that out

I dont really get the point of your post? It's not exactly an unknown fact that OEM parts from manufacturers are generally very expensive.

Also, can you edit your title and remove or change the word "f*cking" to something different such as "fvcking" as it stops people with language filters at work seeing the whole general section of the site. Cheers.

Mate, Aprilia aren't the only ones.

Honda wanted 2000 for 70% of my fairings, not to mention mirrors etc.

Oh, and £5.75 for 2 plastic screws.

If you were to buy a £6,000 bike in parts and assemble it yourslef, it would probably cost you double! hehe

I think a bike mag worked out the cost of building a CBR600RR from scratch and the parts prices came to £35k IIRC.

Joe yeah, i think was RIDE or PB that did an article about the cost of crashing and why in particular honda have been more commanded more expensive premiums. Manufacturers don't make money from the initial sales, but form the aftersales of their components and spare parts!

The original Aprilia cylinder barrel is like 500 quid or something ludicrous like that.
I think building an Rs 125 from scratch with all brand new original parts would cost well over 20k.
If you check on www.easyparts.nl you can find spares for most 50s and 125s. Just checked and the gearbox assembly for the rs is 1800 euros Confused

You have to remember that when they cost building a bike the parts arrive using the just in time method. So they do not have to have massive and expensive storage buildings.
But for spare parts they do, so that has to be counted in the cost.
Just imagine the worldwide cost of all the parts dept of a company like Honda.....
If they took some of the cost off the spares and costed it into the bike, no one would be able to afford to buy one.

Also unlike cars, there is not a high turnover of parts.

While true, that doesn't explain why the prices of the spare parts to build a bike are at least 4 times those of a new complete bike.

All the best

Mmm...

Yamaha 16mm locking rear spindle nut = £5.98

Generic item from Honda Dealership = 99p

Same thing from BMW Dealership = Free (I was desperate so they just gave me one.)

Yamaha battery for TDM = £71.00

eBay generic battery (same part number) = £41 delivered.

Thumbs Up

Hi

Being fair, a lot of OE stuff is fairly decent quality wise compared to a lot of the aftermarket garbage punted out. Bandits first battery lasted 5~6 years for example.

All the best

Would it ever be worth buying a brand new bike and selling it in bits then? Could make a lot of money.

Not really. There are a lot of bits that you wouldn't sell (eg, rear mudguard, airbox, tons of bolts, etc). Price wise you would be competing against the 2nd hand parts on Ebay.

I did consider it a few years ago. Worked it out and selling the major things for a 1200 Bandit would probably get you a profit of about 20%. But that would take quite a while. Then take off the tax and the costs of legally doing it and disposing of oil, brake fluid, etc, and it would not be a particularly profitable business.

All the best

With good condition, well priced second hand bikes it's entirely possible. Stuff like fairings, clipons, and all the other bits easily broken sell quickly and easily, then you're left with the dregs which don't sell quite so quickly. I did it with a ZX6R and it worked well. Smile

For maximum money you'd want to sell all the nuts bolts and washers as well, I just included them with whatever the appropriate part was cos it's just less hassle that way.

With a good business plan, lots of well organised space, and enough time to put in, you could make good money dismantling undamaged bikes. Thumbs Up

All have horrendous parts prices, just some are worse than others.

Italian stuff is often not bad for parts prices, and Aprilia used to be quite cheap for spares but seem to have now ramped their prices up.

Honda have always been expensive.

Yamaha these days seem to keep a decent stock and are not too hideous. That said a choke mechanism for my YSR50 was 1/3 the price from a Mikuni dealer than via Yamaha.

All the best
