Hi folks

I have had a few monetary issues, and so won't be taking any sort of test for a while...

I have a CG125 right now, and while it's fine, I was wondering if there was anything else that was maybe a touch faster - especially uphill?

I'm looking more for constant power rather than flat out speed - if it could do 60 I would be happy.

My poor CG can't cope with going uphill even slightly, finds getting past 40 a struggle if the road isn't flat... oh yeah, and it hates wind too - I get a lot of that, so a faired bike would be useful.

Ideas, please?

Depends how tall you are,

Honda varadero 125's are quite a large bike, I would say they are alot more comfortable than a CG, as IMO CG's are tiny!.

Honda XR can do 60+ with relative ease, although neither of these two bikes are much of a step-up from a CG.

You should be able to pick up a decent XR for about £1200 average, not sure about the varaderos.

My YBR125 was the same with wind, struggled to get above 35mph ish into a medium/strong headwind.

The 125 Varadero is an inline V twin and it outputs 15bhp, bang on the limit for learner bikes, this is your best bet but they're not cheap. Expect to pay £1200+.

My old RXS didn't have much of a problem with wind or hills, it would easily hit 50 and pprobably push on it would top ouot at 70 all indicated mind.

I would like a Varadero, but like you said, the cost would be prohibitive. I could sell my CG (06 model, 3500 miles OTC) but I doubt I'd get more than a grand for it, if I Was lucky - and I'm not rich enough to put the rest towards getting it lol.

Shame I won't be able to do any sort of test before October now - I dread to think how much it's gonna cost Neutral

I'm mildly concerned about your CG... That dosn't sound right.

Agreed - Mine manages rather well uphills, ok so it slows to 40 on my way up to Brecon, but they are all long steady hills as opposed to light inclines.

Have you checked the choke isn't on? Mr. Green

it depends on the size of the rider
My CG didnt enjoy head winds or hills at all, but i am 17 stone. Smile

You could get a 2 stroke, that would give more but you pay in the way of more maintenence needed, which can add up if you dont DIY

The YZF125Rs are nice bikes and will go an indicated 85, but they are new out, and not cheap, so not really an option, and like you have said, varaderos are expensive as they are HUGE bikes

Old CB with 15bhp? MZ RT, also with 15bhp ish? Both are naked bikes and both look decent.

Incidentally, where in buggery has Phantomtek's guide to newbie biking gone? It's been deleted altogether Confused That had loads of 125cc options in.

my CBR125 would do 40 up hills without issues, the key is picking the right gear and keeping the revs up (6k+ minimum), if you drop below it won't have enough torque to run over a snail.

A CG dosn't have a rev counter so it's difficult to trade info like that online, but its all down to the feel and sound feedback from the bike to do exactly the same thing.

17 stone dosn't seem like a lot tbh. I'm in the 13-14 zone depending on how disciplined I've been in the week and I've carried a lot of weight on my old CG.

The only place it had a problem was Georges hill which is a 45% slope, otherwise the very, very worst performance dropped to was 55mph up hill into strong winds with no cover.

My hyosung gt125 has been fine uphill, just remember to drop down a gear... it outdoes the cg i did my cbt on. I managed about 50 (indicated) on a fairly steep hill yesterday, and 72ish (indicated) on the flat - a new 2 wheeled land speed record for me Smile

I guess the gtr125 would be just a touch faster in the wind because of the fairing.
