Has anyone ever removed a tank pad?

Hi guys,
I just thought that I would attempt to harness the vast experience of BCF to ask a question.

I have a really manky tank pad on my bike and if it gets any worse I shall have to remove it. I just wanted to know if anyone has ever done it, and if so what damage it did to their tank?

I don't want to do it if its going to take all of my paint off! Also I have a plastic tank so I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

What do you reckon?

I managed to get one off without too much hassle. Just did it really slowly trying to get loads of water behind the bit I had just peeled off, it did leave a mark, but I just covered that over with a new tank pad!

If it only leaves like the gum from the glue you should be able to clean it of with a some meth's without doing any harm I would say.

I know my tank pad has split to so will probably get round to changing mine one day.

I removed a tankpad by heating it with a hairdryer to soften it , it seemed to have worked as the tankpad came away easily enough.

I just pulled my tank pad off and got as much of the sticky pad/glue off as poss by hand. I then used some GT85, it's similar to WD40 but water resistant and contains teflon from Halfords cycle section, and a bit of elbow grease. Came off no probs and didn't leave a mark.

Removed the tank pad from my bike last summer.

Just got the pad as hot as I could and then peeled it off. Took off the remaining glue with a bit of petrol on an old rag.

How come the zip touches the tank at all?

Because I have a long reach to the bars and the zip on my jacket is offset to the right. My leathers don't have the same problem. Smile

Heat it up, then peel it off. Then use meths/petrol to get the last bits off.
