I've read through a few threads now that either seem to contradict each other and/or I can't make any sense of. Since February I've had my car licence 2 years, I will have had my bike licence in 2 years in late April. Anyone know the amount of points I'd be allowed to get, now, before a ban would be given out under the 'totting up' procedure?

No, 12. He's had his car licence for 2 years, therefore it's 12 points. It works on the licence, not the extra categories.

afaik Very Happy

So 50% say I've got a 6 point allowance and 50% say I've got a 12 point allowance, a nice conclusive thread then Laughing Maybe I should have started a poll? Razz

I was told, by the guys at the DSA after doing my theory test, that if you incur 6 or more points within a two year period of passing your test (bike test) with either your car or your bike, then you will lose your bike entitlement and will have to retake both theory and practical again to get it back.

I don't know how it would work against losing the entire license (as in not being able to drive at all) as you should be allowed 12 points on a normal car license. Whether the police will take it off you for six points, just because they deem you a dangerous or wreckless driver (or whatever), I don't know. And frankly, I don't intend to find out. I value my license way too much.

There's a simple way of finding out. Go for a thrash past the local BiB and see what they do (note: Irony mode Rolling Eyes )

Don't drive too fast for a couple of years. Or if you do, do it somewhere safe.

Alternatively, go to the local police station and ask for clarification. Wink

I thought it was 6 points in your first year of passing, then 12 afterwards

Maybe, thing is over 100mph on a motorway or over 90mph on an A/B road is likely to get you 6 points. How many of us sub-2 year riders can say that we never do that.

Hi

Afraid not. Those speeds are likely to result in an automatic ban.

My understanding is that if you get 6 points within 2 years of passing you first licence category test you loose your licence. However once that is passed you are up to 12 points before you loose your licence, even on categories that you have gained since and still under 2 years ago.

All the best

Keith

Yes from what I can tell the 2yr 6 point probation is from your first full licence, it doesn't renew when you add an extra category.

6 points for 2 years from getting your first full licence. Adding extra categories doesn't mean the 2 years start again.

I've had my full bike llicence two years at the end of April too. My understanding was as Bendy and others have said and as I have had my car licence for over two years I needn't worry about the 2 year 6 point thing for my bike entitlement. (not that I have any points or ever speed or anything.) Smile
