I'm currently studying one and beginning to wonder if its worth all the hassle. I was talking to a guy in the union the other day who took great delight in expressing his view that a media studies degree is worthless.

Anyone else done a degree and found it to be very different from what you expected? Call me picky, but learning in great depth about early soviet cinema and having to read hundreds of pages of feminist critiques about everything ever made is not my idea of useful knowledge.

If it gets me a good job then its all been worth while but is there any demand for people with a media degree?

Doubt it. What grades did you need to get into it?

I got a B and C on an AVCE ICT course and that was enough to get on. Could probably have got on with as little as two C's

From what I've heard it isn't a particularly useful degree.

But a lot of employers these days will give you a better starting pay just because you have a degree. Smile

Not if it's in a completly irelevant subject to your job.

Degrees are much much easier to get, and about 50% of 'em are pretty worthless.

Not true, many employers will value a degree in an irrelevant subject.

About 50% of graduates go onto something totaly unrelated to their degree.

True. Where Charlotte works (IT section of HSBC) they only employ graduates, but they do not care what they are a graduate in. The computing degrees are fairly useless for the work they do there, and computing graduates go through exactly the same training as any other trainee going to work in the IT section.

All the best

I've heard that some companies (ie for IT related jobs) prefer graduates with non computing related degrees, so they can train them, not sure how likely this is, but I can see why, they won't have bad habits etc and can learn from new. On the other hand,
I have a degree in Computer Science and 7 years experience and that doesn't guarantee anything either (my boss doesn't have a degree in IT). Carry on with your degree, if you like it, you could always do another course part time when you have a job if you wanted, and usually work pays for it.

I know a guy who has a degree in media, he's now doing IT. Also know a girl who does media, she also has a part time job in IT, so don't worry about it.

If you don't like what you're doing, and don't want to move into media, change your degree as soon as you can to something you do like, or something you think you'll have enough interest in to pass. A degree is better than no degree though, i'm biased to computer degrees cause i'm sad like that Smile

As a headhunter specialising in Marketing, Media and Advertising I can tell you that a degree in Media Studies is not that highly regarded. However, if you attain a 1st or 2.1 then this will go some way to improve your job prospects.

It also depends where you are doing it too, for example if you are studying at a College for Further Education then you will find that employers & consultants will view this fairly negatively.

Ultimately it depends on what you want to do when you graduate.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately Media Studies is the often used example of a fairly worthless but increasingly popular degree course which is used to compare to the slightly more useful but increasing unpopular courses like Mathematics.

Just stick at it and make sure you get a good grade. If you find nobody cares about your degree when you've finished, consider doing a postgraduate course. With 50% of people going to uni now, it's going to take a postgraduate qualification to stand out from the crowd of graduates these days. Penny Coin Penny Coin

Ideally Id like to go into a media related job, but theres no shortage of people wanting to do that. In terms of supply and demand when looking for a job, ill be fucked. Especially coming from the north of england.

May as well stick with it now. Besides, pushing trolleys for a living shouldn't be too bad Laughing

No they're not Carvell.

And General Studies is a real a-level after all. Wink Laughing

IMO, there is no point in doing a degree just because you can get into Slough Polytechnic (aka Thamas Valley University) type places, and get a degree in social studies, or something which needs like one D and one E to get into. Waste of time & money.

Saying you have General Studies is like saying you have cycling proficiency.
