I am looking into joining the fire service and have managed to get a place at an open day where I have to do a bleep test in order to get an application form, I have to achieve a score of over 9.6, anyone know how hard 9.6 is to get ?

FWIW the highest score you have to get in the military is 9.10 so its not insurmountable Wink

Depends, if you've smoked since you were 15 like I did when I last did a bleep test (and prob weighed in around a good 13.5 stone at the time) then you might find it hard. That said I was always shit at running (friends used to say to me "phill, if you ever get in a fight, just stand there and fight, because if you try running, they'll catch and batter you). Anyhow, think I got to 9.5/10 before I was ready to die, best way to practice I think is just going over to the local park and setting up two markers spaced ~20 metres apart from each other, you can make a tape/cd/mp3 file which beeps say 3 times every minute to indicate the next level, and single beeps in between to indicate when you should have reached one end. I think the starting speed is about 5mph and increases by 0.3mph for each successive level.

You can buy the test on cd's, but with a little effort you can save yourself from being extorted.

9.10's not that easy, everyone always says it is though (you obviously have a small penis if you don't do well).

I run every day, and I can only just get level 11. You hear stories of people getting to level 16-17, and these people also do wheelies the length of Scotland, whilst blind folded. Rolling Eyes

I do the bleep test as part of my public services course and i got 13-14 and i don't even exercise. One guy in our course who is a health freak got 17 Shocked .

Make sure you eat a lot of energy before hand and drink lots of fluid to get through it.

Anyone with some vague level of fitness ought to be able to get over 9 as long as they are prepared to push it hard as they can.

I managed it while I was at college to Join the TA and I did no exercise at all, ever. I was about ready to puke by the end though.

All the people saying 'I'm 20 stone and eat nothing but pies and got 18 on the bleep test no sweat' probably had the markers too close together.

9-10 is achievable though don't worry about it.

Unless things have changed since I was in school anything 9+ takes a very good level of fitness to achieve, don't expect to walk it unless your a very active person and run quite a bit.

I'm a "good" runner and although I hate the bleep test I can get to 11.5 if I go for it, properly set up.

9.6 is quite easily achieved.. Pace yourself and you will find you will be getting well above it. When ever i did bleep test at school i was getting around the 14 mark... Had to do it quite often as well as it helped me keep a better pace when it came to cross country.

You might scrape the bleep test but what happens when it actually comes to doing all the stuff needed for the job should you get there?

Put in the effort now and during all parts of your application process. Most places requiring physical fitness would rather employ someone who just scrapes through but puts in 110% than someone who does it comfortably but only ever gives 50% effort.

It's different to just straightfoward running though as it's about conserving your energy and pacing yourself which is why some people struggle with it. I've not done it since I was at school when I used to do a lot of running but was getting level 13 back then but never sure how high I could've actually gone as they just stopped it there as nobody else was running by then, was irritating that Laughing

Everybody's saying "pace yourself", but I don't understand what you mean by that. It sets the pace, you can't pace yourself, you have to do the pace of the test!

The other thing to bear in mind with a bleep test, is it doesn't really get 'fast' it gets slightly faster, but because you've been running by the time the speed builds up, it feels a lot harder.

If I recall correctly, the RAF fitness test anyway, each level lasts a minute, so if you can run at a reasonable pace for 10 minutes, you'll be set! Thumbs Up

Well it's just about timing your runnning speed exactly with the bleeps, watch a test and you'll see how so many people arrive before the bleep in the first few levels because they're running too fast, can't seem to get the pace right. It's just about holding energy back for when it gets faster too, it's like running a race, do 5km and you need to have enough energy in reserve to sprint the last few hundred meters if you want to take some places, not everyone can do it though.

I hated the bleep test with a passion, often found myself being chucked out of it by one of the supervisors even though I was nowhere near full stretch, but it was a well known fact around the place, that it was far easier to pass on a whim than the standard (for us) 1.5 mile run alternative.

Good for those days when you are hungover, nackered but realise your fitness test has expired and are told to report to the gym to rectify the situation.

We always used to get a bollocking for doing that, as according to them it was indicative of the fact that you havent put full effort in during the race, as there is no way you should physically have anything left to give by the end.

Yeah probably as it's more of a death march in the army than a competition which is what I was doing. In races I'd generally pace myself with someone through most of the race and then sprint past them at the end and anyone else I thought I could catch up with, it works if you can keep pace at the front of the pack, just irritates people Laughing
