My little sis has just been diagnosed with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome).
It basically means she will probably have to have fertility treatment if she wants kids, will find it hard not to become overweight, and will probably become diabetic in later life. Basically she has totally shit luck as it is, and this has hit her pretty hard.
Anyone got any ideas to cheer her up? ____________________ Don't practice it until you get it right, practice it until you don't get it wrong.

Maybe you could try finding a very busy internet forum where everyone doesn't hate you? ____________________ Don't practice it until you get it right, practice it until you don't get it wrong.

My wife has PCOS and is overweight, I don't love her any less for it. For a start being the right weight and all that bollox doesn't mean anything anyway - it's what's inside that counts, and any decent bloke will see this. However there's also tons of books out there for GI diets etc which help with weight loss alongside PCOS and if followed correctly can be very successful.
We've been trying for the past 6 years or so for a little 'un and been to many GP's, consultants etc, etc. They go on and on and on about BMI levels and what level you can take which drugs etc. Eventually we took control of what was happening and paid for a private consultation and that showed us how shit some of the NHS consultants are - we changed hospitals, got a different consultant who was brilliant and I'm now getting home to my nearly 6 week old gorgeous girl every day!
Because we'd been told so many times she couldn't have a baby until my wife lost 6 stone, we'd given up thinking it could happen and weren't really trying properly. The new consultant just told us go at it like rabbits at the right times and it would happen - and it did!
Deep down we're still furious though thinking we could have had our little 'un 5 years ago with the right guidance to start with...
PCOS is a crap condition to deal with on a day to day basis don't get me wrong, but it shouldn't stop your sister getting what she wants if she puts her mind to it.
(And now I feel utterly bizarre having posted all this on a bike forum!!) ____________________ Previous: Aprilia Habana Retro 50cc (beauty), Yamaha SR125 (fell apart), Honda XR125 (nippy little commuter), Honda SLR650 (Geewhizz), Yamaha Diversion 900S (Smoooooth) written off courtesy of a stupid escaped horse.
(7 year gap), BMW F650 (Relaxing ride). Aprilia Caponord ETV1000 (Big and bold). Yamaha FZS600 (got me in trouble too quick!).
Current: Yamaha TDM 900 (Comfy, light but big, power when needed). Also now a Tiger 1050, easily best of the lot! |

I know it's a bit random posting it on here but I just need some ideas to cheer her up a bit.

Younger sister, and youre 16 aint ya Moonie?
We looking at 12? 14? How old?
Im assuming you dont have much money at your disposal.
I would suggest talking to your parents/parent/guardian (sorry, dont wanna assume your situation ) and get them to help you, you need financial backing for entertainment purposes
Then perhaps plan a day out, a weekend somewhere she would really enjoy with the family, perhaps even plan a girly night in for her and her friends, convince the rents to leave the house for the evening etc
Its all about helping her feel independent I reckon, get a strong sense of self and self-confidence will grow (or just increase, I obvs dont know etc) and with this comes the strength to deal with stuff.
One thing I'll say is that look at the long term treatment of her as an older brother, supportive etc, as this will mean more than a single day/event etc.
If all else fails, take her to cinema to see a film she would love to see, and just make sure she knows older bro is there for her

Its not a life-threatening disease, not at this stage of her life.
The ramifications that have been explained to her (somewhat irresponsibly, if she is that young) ARE relevant to her at a later stage in life, but this is something which can be planned and/or adjustments in life made for.
I was diagnosed with the same thing after a miscarriage quite a few years ago. At the time I was hoping to continue with family-building, and PCOS was one of the pointers for possible miscarriages ... but a short time later I split with Anita's dad anyway, so I suppose its not relevant to me personally any more. Probably I still have it, but life has taken other directions anyway.
So anyway: I'm 47, overweight (almost always have been) but find that even now its not *that* difficult to lose weight when you concentrate on eating properly and exercising (which I aren't actually concentrating on doing very much)... so far I haven't acquired diabetes, although its something at my age that I am aware I may well end up with.
And lets be honest here, doctors like to factor all sorts of things into later-in-life conditions such as diabetes and heart attacks, its the way medical people do it: link anything you can to anything else, to scare people into "living healthily". We all like to think that we can get away with eating crap, not exercising, and smoking like trains, but we know that we'll suffer for it later.
Thing is, no matter what we do or don't do: age catches up with us, and we suffer anyway.
Your sister needs NOT to use it as an excuse for not living her life to the full - perhaps merely to guide her into living as healthily as she can, and *mostly* for ensuring that she does get gynaecological or fertility matters sorted out properly if and when they become an issue ... but its not a legitimate reason for hair-rending and teeth-gnashing and excuse-making at this point in the proceedings.
Sorry if this sounds harsh. Its not meant to.
I only say these things to try and emphasise how - at her age, its not a reason to be panicking, merely to be ensuring her healthcare in the future is based on awareness that it is a condition that she has.
Plus, I think that beanfeast's post about his wife's experiences is very inspirational. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

The reason I mentioned such supportive methods though HK, is that, as a very young girl (12/13/14) she will most probably not fully comprehend the ramifications (not having a dig at her intelligence, its just the truth for 99% of young 'uns), and as such, the younger mind tends to allocate things such as this into the "fear" category.
And as Moonie said, she has had a bad stroke of luck etc.
So whilst I agree with you about the long term dealings, ie not make it into a big problem, dont let it hold you back etc, short-term wise I believe it can be fairly scary to be told this at a young age. Factoring in that not all people are the same, and most women/girls are more emotionally vulnerable (fact, not sexist! ) ____________________ "Oh....it looks like Average Joe's is forfeiting the match!" - "Yeah, its a risky strategy but lets see if it pays off for 'em Cotton." |

Cheers guys
HK It's nice to know that it's not as serious as the doctor made it out to be.
And Fawbish I'm looking at Festival tickets I could book for next year, and something for the near future, nice ideas
I think most of it is just the fact that she is 14 and what matters most to her atm is being "normal" and fitting in, and she has just had a huge label with the word syndrome stamped on her forehead. She knows that even though it's not a huge deal for the time being, it's just the fact that it's one more thing to deal with on top of growing up.
Tbh my little sis is the most mature person for her age I have ever met, and she is taking it ok but mainly because of what she has been told about infertility and long term health risks she can't help but be a bit depressed. ____________________ Don't practice it until you get it right, practice it until you don't get it wrong.

Yeah, I got one:
Tell her I'm a fat old bird, and I smoke and eat too much, rarely exercise and I have a beautiful daughter, and a great life full of excitement, laughter, fun, madness, blokes regularly hustling me up throughout my whole life, and still even at this age/size, I've been known to panic about "being late" at the wrong time of the month ... and lots and lots of people who love me, regardless of having PCOS.
God, I'm so inspirational ... to myself, at least, if nobody else ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

Considering your first post in this thread, and you've also let yourself get into the state of having bailiffs visiting you.... I'd say it'd be hard for you to be more intelligent - in fact I'd consider you to be a bit of a muppet.

Well maybe you should have a think about the first post...... I am sure I wouldn't consider somebody posting my medical conditions to strangers on the internet very "helpful".
And as for the bailliffs, I suggest you go and read the thread again, I owe no money.
Based on your last post I would consider you a bit of a muppet really. |

Quite the opposite, I have no idea who the girl in question is but it's good to see someone looking out for her. I'd appreciate others doing that for me if they ever thought I needed it.

Now maybe you should re-read my post - I never said you owed money or not, not up to me to say. I simply suggested you're not clever for having got into the situation where bailiffs are about to visit you.
Now keep posting your drivel, I'm enjoying this!

I am not, I think you will find I was trying to be helpful and said nothing warlike or argumentative at all when I first posted in the thread, that was started by moonie.
Then beatnk or whatever jumped aboard.
Then you came and made assumptions about war. |
