Recently My Derbi GPR50 has been making a reasonably loud rattling noise at 8000RPM. When ive got the bike neutral and Im not wearing my lid it sounds like a mettalic rattle/jingle simmilar to keys rattling (its not i held my keys in my hand so they couldnt rattle so its not that)

But when Im riding it sounds like a buzzing, kinda like a bit of paper vibrating when its in the wind. I dunno if its somthing minor that will become major or something I can put off til' ive got some money to spare... Smile

UPDATE
Not the airbox/exhaust/loose fairings

Just had a quick check, no loose bolts or fairings... And I cbf to check the exhaust tonight. If you guys keep posting suggestions or ideas then ill make a list and strip the bike down to check it over on sunday as it does annoy me somewhat...

lol Karma to anyone who offers a suggestion Thumbs Up

How many miles has it done since it's last rebuild?

Im thinking piston rings?

Although my knowlege of the bike is minimal and even more so my knowlege of rattling noises!

Air box is fine, I've cleaned and oiled the filter just incase.
It wasnt the fairings cos I took them all off and it still did it.
The exhaust wasnt blowing and I decided to decoke it while I did other stuff.

The sound is definately coming from the carb or the engine. I know that dosnt really help but it is... Sad

I dunno what to do really, should I wait and see if anything goes wrong or should I get a professional to sort it ASAP?

For my 50 its part of the servicing to take the piston out and check it, and check the head and that for buildup and condition, if your that worried id do that, but if its fine youll have to shell out for some gasket sets i think?

Agree with tutton, its a 2stroke so they're simple to work on, id check the carb out first since its less of a job to work on, not sure what would make a rattling noise in the carb though Confused

Next get yourself a top-end gasket kit and take the top end off, check the piston and rings, while the piston is off try and move the con-rod left to right (not with force) if it moves then its a sign that your big end bareings(sp?) are going, If your not a very mechanical person then its probably worth paying to have them done done by a mechanic rather than tearing into the engine yourself Laughing

To be honest unless its been treated really badly (run on low engine oil) or quite high milage then id be supprised if your big end bareings were gone, its certainly not something ive personaly encountered in a 50cc anyway Laughing

At a loss as to what else it could be, try and further locate the noise if possible before you do anything else.

Also I wouldnt advise doing any of what ive put up there without somebody who really knows 2 stroke inside out confirming it first Thumbs Up

Im fairly competent with mechanical stuff so id prolly be ok... But just incase how much would you expect it to be to get a garage to check the piston?

and where would I get a top end gasket kit and roughly how much?

left and right movement is ok, as long as its not excessive.

UP and DOWN movement is a sign of bearings going.
