Had a few hours to kill today so managed to get out on the bike for a spot of greenlaning - it's not really offroading because all of the tracks are byways which are roads. In theory, you can take your car down them if it's taxed, insured and Mot'd.

First gentle lane of the day.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/97b2aa4f.jpg

Which leads into this sandy, narrow area where evil ramblers could lurk behind any bend.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/4f1dee15.jpg

Next lane heads steeply downwards which isn't really captured by the photo - all pretty dry and easy going so far.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/faccd4c6.jpg

Nice dry straight lane to blast down.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/9d07243a.jpg

Finally some mud! Just power on and let the bike move around and do all the work.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/5b405e2b.jpg

Lovely soft mud - quite deep in places as I found out last week when I fell in it. Bike just munches it up.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/500a89a0.jpg

Then another easy blast through the trees.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/d70533f7.jpg

Then onto the road and over that bridge - have been through the river a few times before but the legality of it is a bit dubious.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/eb033862.jpg

Nothing like village life - especially with the sound of a loud thumper blasting across the village green!

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/5915db18.jpg

Just round the corner from the cricket game and I'm back on another nice dry lane
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/b27d47b2.jpg

This is a great lane - heads downhill to the shadowed area where the jumps start - one after the other for ages. Great fun.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/e2e9c206.jpg

Come round a corner to find a tasty stinking puddle - up on the pegs and power through - remember to close your mouth!
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/e4523eaa.jpg

A 20 second section of road leads onto this lane - starts off shallow sand but gets quite deep in places. Got to lean back and keep the power on. The bike will be all over the place but just keep that throttle open and all will be OK - don't shut it off or you can fly over the bars as I found out a few weeks back. As usual people are in the way.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/58ac36e7.jpg

A bit further along - not too deep here.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/ca90ef13.jpg

And looking back.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/78bfdcc7.jpg

The view to the left - out in the middle of nowhere.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/5c63236a.jpg

The end of the sandy stretch - always a good time to stop and have a drink and be thankful you got through without coming off.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/3186a5e7.jpg

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/33fda492.jpg

Then a bit of road work to get to the next lane.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/9b22ce78.jpg

Had to stop while someone shows me offroading - Fiat Multipla style.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/4258ca1d.jpg

The next lane starts off nicely enough...
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/4dd4cd22.jpg

...then it starts to climb - it's a bit rutted with roots and stones the size of half bricks all over the place...
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/c39aed53.jpg

...just a case of keeping the gas on and letting the bike jump all over the place and sort itself out.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/edf4c87c.jpg

And you emerge from that dark and gloomy lane into a picturesque country scene.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/8e317a01.jpg

But before you know it you're going steeply down hill and heading towards the dreaded steps.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/1dad0fb9.jpg

The camera doesn't really show how steep this bit is. Very steep downhill with a series of drops.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/59a34d0e.jpg

Onwards and downwards - heading towards the bottom of the Devil's Punchbowl at Hindhead.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/43df32c3.jpg

And you can breathe a sigh of relief when you see this bridge as means you've made it down the steps. Now to climb up out of the Punchbowl.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/8cb5f1b2.jpg

A dark gloomy lane brings you uphill to here - time to go around the Punchbowl's edge.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/8ac3795c.jpg

Down here towards the open air.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/9bccdc86.jpg

From gloomy lanes back out into the light and the sunshine.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/ba6db8af.jpg

[b]The view to the right - showing the Punchbowl.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/305913fd.jpg

Nice and easy around the edge.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/fb5482c1.jpg

This lane is dead straight and goes on for about a mile or so - all stones so time to get shaken about.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/0e8b273a.jpg

Towards the end of that lane.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/f00c83de.jpg

Finally, some mud again. Time to go right and head down hill once again.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/9e1f8aed.jpg

A long fairly steep decent. Again, the camera not really showing the angle.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/562c528a.jpg

Things are starting to get a bit interesting here. A drop about 1/3 up the picture followed by another about 2/3 up.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/72fd04cd.jpg

A bit further on and it's stony, slippier and really rutted.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/e29dae2a.jpg

Still going down and it's getting wetter and the ruts bigger.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/48f7ca7f.jpg

Really rutted and slippy. Been down here before when it's been under water.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/2b5af8d8.jpg

Then it's back the way I came for a bit and back to the sandy lane. I stop in the car park at the start of it for a breather.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/114d4852.jpg

Here is the other end of the lane full of jumps - going back up the other way this time.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/46901147.jpg

And looking back the way I came you can see some of the bumps (through the fuzziness).
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/0ef52b00.jpg

Then it's some gentle lanes and some road bits heading towards home before I pick up one of the last lanes.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/edd00dc4.jpg

The Great British countryside.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/c3922cb8.jpg

Looks pretty harmless but the sand can get very, very slippery. Quite deceptive. Especially as there are some deep patches of mud - and I nearly stacked it into a tree powering sideways through some deep muddy ruts.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/cc532af5.jpg

Another gentle descent.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/88f42a0f.jpg

The final lane of the day - carve your way through the nettles.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/53070afa.jpg

My trusty steed after a good day.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v619/baldgit/345ad198.jpg

Perfect day for it really.

How do you find out about public bywayys etc in your local area?

Just an OS map and look about or any easier ways?

Seems a lot of fun!

Join the TRF. Not only will they show you all your local lanes and help you mark up your maps, some money will go towards the fighting fund and help keep the lanes open as it seems we're fighting a losing battle against the rambliars.

I feel a certain amount of sympathy for the views of the ramblers. But then my Viking genes cut in and I think fvck 'em, mow them down.

Ditto I've been toying with the idea of doing this for a while.

I've got no sympathy for them whatsoever. 99% of them are fine, some even smile and say hello. However, there is a hardcore minority that are absolute scum. I think it's something like 1% of the unsurfaced paths are available to motorised vehicles - so thats 99% available to the ramblers. Yet they still seek to close down what few lanes we have even though they can go pretty much anywhere. Selfish scum.

Nearly every horse rider I have encountered on the lanes have been very pleasant - we stop and turn our engines off and they ride past, smile and say thanks. All very civil.

Then you get the beardy twat ramblers with their knee high socks and maps hanging from their necks who steadfastly refuse to move to the side of the lane. What I want to do is drag them into the bushes and cut them into pieces but that would be very naughty. Instead I slow right down and pass slowly when I can as they hardly need more ammo to use against us. You wouldn't see them walking down the middle of the A3 so why they think it's perfectly fine I don't know?

Anyway, I'm in danger of going into a full blown rant so I'll just shut up.

No sympathy for 'em either, there are thousands and thousands of miles of footpaths across the country, yet a much smaller number of byways. But Rambler Association type folk insist on walking byways and then get arsey when there are other people using the same byway in a completely legitimate way. If they just stuck to their footpaths they wouldn't be bothered by 4x4's or bikes.

Brake for horses, aim for ramblers. Thumbs Up

Already interested in getting into off-roading, selling my bike maybe. But this just makes me want to offroad more and more.

Thanks for your comment about the horse riders Joe, as an ex rider i really appreciate some off roaders concerns where horses are concerned. The scenery looks just the job and something i would like to do again with the right bike, some people have all the luck. Very Happy Very Happy Thumbs Up Thumbs Up -Jockey.

No problem - I can't remember having a bad experience with a horse rider. I think these two groups realise there is enough room for everyone. It's just some of the ramblers that seem a little deranged.

I actually teach the Duke of Edinburghs Award and understand the concern expressed by walkers however as a motorcylist, and understanding these are actual roads (although poor quality) they should be treated in a similar way.

If anything the vehicles should have some level of priority, i mean, would you walk down the middle of the street and complain if a car hit you?

Keep the 'roads' open to vehicles i say Thumbs Up

What I don't understand is why the walker assumes they have right to be there over a rider/driver.

These are roads but just unsurfaced. There are 1000's more footpaths and bridleways open to the walker and yet they seek to block the limited access us riders (and drivers) have. I just don't get it. Yes, they get in our way as well, but you don't see us seeking to get pedestrians barred from byways.

Can't we all just get along? Group hug.

And getting stuck in the smallest of ruts Laughing

We met a quad rider out on a ride - he was slow and couldn't get up a hill we go up due to his 6" suspension travel - and this quad was Ohlins all round. His suspension alone probably cost as much as my bike if not more and yet he's got a quad that will hardly go anywhere.

Stop being a big girlie ghey and get a bike Laughing

Their views points must be very restricted, what with having their heads stuck so far up their own arses. Razz

"fucking 4x4's, wish you fucking got stuck"
"why do you lot even want to drive down these paths, they're just really muddy"
"blah blah blah, bridleway, blah blah blah" < I then point at sign which says byway >
"we can't go along here easily any more thanks to people churning it up so badly"

Gotta be said though, it's much more challenging trying to get big 4x4's along byways than it is bikes. Razz

Now I really can't wait to see what you're making on that lathe. I'm thinking 500cc, 2 stroke, and huge blades sticking out from the wheels a la Julius Ceaser.....

I can't get another bike, members of my family would consider it as another of the same (motorbike) whilst a Quad bike can be seen as a totally different type of vehicle. Also Quad bikes rule, especially big 2 stroke ones... Very Happy

Joe are you just using standard inner tubes with your tyres or are they filled with tyre foam or slime?
