PostPosted: 12:34 - 17 Aug 2008    Post subject: My Ninja ;) Reply with quote

I was sitting in Amsterdam early in the week, mouring the loss of my Hornet and it suddenly occured to me, get home son and buy a bike you have been lusting after for years, something to be proud of...

So on Friday i picked up my Ninja, its a '99 G2, Red+Black (Not my first choice of colours, would have prefered green or black but hey fuckit...)
Its only showing 9800 miles, came with braided steel hoses and a blue flame can, which is a big bonus for me as these are the two mods i always end up doing to my bikes.

My first impressions are Shocked, it just keeps pulling and pulling the higher up the revs you go, it doesent seem to run out of steam, On the way back from picking it up i saw 150 on the clocks without too much effort and it felt like it had a bit more left... It also feels really planted and after about 15 mins i felt at home on it.

It sounds the dogs danglies too Smile,

Anyway thats enough of me talking, have some pictures and im off out for another ride Thumbs Up

Nice buy! What happened to your Hornet if you don't mind me asking?

Im sure I read somewhere that the J1 or the J2 fairing kits fir straight onto your G2... They have the twin head lamps..

The ZX9R should see 170 easily, probably extend right up to about 180-190... I take it yours is a 600?

I just hope you have better luck with red kawasaki ninjas than I do - i royally buggered two of them leaving me about £3k's in the shitz. Get some dunlop roadsmarts on them as soon as possible and you'd have a very competent commuter cum tourer cum weekend hooner. It's almost a grand more than what i paid for my 96 F model but I'm sure the J/G's are infinitely better. Keep on top of your brakes especially during winter - them tokicos have a reputation for siezing. At least you got the braided hoses and gilles rearsets. They're not bad bikes - incredibly frugal for a 600 - be as stingy as possible on the throttle and you'd get 50mpg Thumbs Up

I've got 2CT's on my J1, so far they seem great. Not had a twitch and they dont seem to be wearing away at all.

I've managed to eek out 200 miles from a tank (including on to reserve) but normal range is140-160 before reserve depending on riding.

I've got some black pazzo levers for sale if your interested? Razz

Reuben, was it you that had stompgrips on your bike? They're pretty awesome as I no longer feel any strain in my arms trying to resist against braking. get some even if you only use your bike for commuting!

Twincam: The hornet dropped a valve and i was looking at an engine transplant, I have been riding those middle-range detuned 600's (hornet bandits etc) for years now and i wanted something a bit more rapid anyway...

Titz: I hope so too, touch some wood for me...
Im the best man at a wedding in poland on wednesday, when i get back in the country on money the dealership i got the bike from is giving it a free service, im gonna get them to clean the brakes, check the seals etc, as with braided hoses on the front the front brake isnt as firm as i would like it, when it does bite its nice and hard but that front lever has to travel an awful long way.. Im also gonna get some crash bungs fitted...

Reuben: I think at the moment its got some Dunlop 208's, they dont inspire as much confidance as the pirelli diablos did on the hornet, but the bike does feel planted, 2CT's you say? Either of you had any experience with BT021's or Diablos on the ninja?, i like both tyres but only had them on lesser bikes, dont know if they would be up to the extra power/weight...

And Stompgrips? whats that, some kind of grippy stuff that goes on the side of the tank?

I had 020's on the bike and it did okay for 6000 miles before they squared off so much that i couldn't trust them (had about 2mm+ of tread left, which was probably good for another 2-3000 miles). I've got dunlop roadsmarts (had D209's and D208's before) and it's a significant improvement over the older dunlops. Diablo stradas will suit the bike nicely. I personally go for the roadsmarts since i like my handling to be neutral and stable.

Stompgrips ARE them grippy stuff that you stick to the side of your tank. They promote so much more grip on the knees taking the pressure of your wrists and elbows on long spirited rides.

2CTs are very good. More than sticky enough for the road.

For a mileage indication, I've done 5000 miles and 2 trackdays on mine on the 900ss and I reckon I've still got 1000 miles left.

I'd say Pirelli Diablos would grip better and offer more feel, but I'd destroy them too quickly. I absoloutely munched through a rear on my old BROS, the 2CT's give more than enough grip and feel but theyre gonna last a lot longer. I've gone off Brdgestones over the years. Theyre ok but square off too quickly.

@Tits: Yeah I've got stomp grip on my bike. Cant say its too much of a benefit for me but I dont tend to brake very hard on the road and have pretty good upper body strength/endurance so never find it an issue.

I cant really afford a new set of tyres seeing as i spent most of my money on the bike, In a weeks time its getting a full service and im gonna get them to clean the front caliper and change the seals as its not right at the moment, most bike shops seem over-eager to want to completely replace the calipers with aftermarket ones, seems a bit of lazyness to me, i know its a bit of a bastard if you have one or two pistons that are seized, and theres 12 seals, but still...

but later today im going over to see type_mo, hes sorting me out with some crash bungs, so ill get those put on too.

When i get the cash I'll Probably give the 2CT's a try first, as i do like bridgestones but have also found they square off rapidly...

Stuntman: The difference is immense, firstly the power, the top-end rush blows everything i have ridden (bar a slabside GSXR-750) out of the water, it pulls and pulls. Filtering is no problem, Its gonna take my body a while to get used to the position, at the moment i dont feel i could ride this bike for 10 hours, Im pretty unfit at the moment though so thats not helping matters.

TBH i knew a sportsbike would be nowhere near as comfy as the hornet but its a sacrifice i am willing to make Smile

Feeling that power when your gunning it, To see girls dribbling as you rumble past them And the sound of it all.

Thats all for now, ill keep you updated how i get on with the bike after i have put some miles on it...

hi i just bought the 99 g1 in green n purle looks same as yours you sure yours isnt a 98-99 g1?
anyway i had 165mph outta mine no problems im running dunlop qualifiers and there execelent tyres but only because i get dunlops at trade prices..lol
the only thing i find that after owning the gsxr1100 you do have to scream the tits out of the zx6r and if ya get caught in the wrong gear forget it
on the plus side corners are amazing on these bikes nearly courner for you there so easy to chuck about its un real

qualifiers seem to work exceptionally well on pre B1H ZX6R's. Good for 5000 miles. Late '90's ninjas are very underrated because most people tend to go for R6's and SRADs. They make exceptionally fast sports tourers and can do distances without worrying about anything. R6's have dodgy 2nd gears, Srads are grotesquely uncooth, ZX6R's are just underrated and tend to be owned by more "sensible" owners.
