In my local area there are no good motorbike mechanics for absolutely miles around.

I need a full engine rebuild.

BUT, for £275 I could just buy a whole new engine and fit it to my bike, an an extra carb is £30.

So, how hard is it to fit a new engine?

Also my bike has been diagnosed by a motorbike mechanic I don't trust as far as I could throw Anne Widdecombe, so it might not be that, but am a bit stuck for ideas.

Please note it's not just a top end rebuild, it's the whole thing (according to the mechanic).

Any help appreciated

Joe

I would go for the rebuild, you dont know the history of the second hand motor, and that could need a rebuild sometime soon for all you know.

Easiest way i see it is to remove the engine from your bike and drive it (parents/mate) to the mechanic. Means you save yourself a couple of quid in getting the mechanic to remove it, and you learn some stuff in the process. Thumbs Up

Problem is he mechanic is

1) shit

2) too lazy to do it because he is booked until xmas and apparently he wouldn't make enough money from it.

Trust me though I know he's bollocks, the only reason he looked at it in the first place was he was at my work.

He's the only guy for miiiiles around and broke my all the electrics on my dad's CB900 whilst replacing the altenator.

Also I may be able to get a brand new motor from work, although I will have to check tomorrow.

Best advice i can give is to do a few miles and get your bike to a good mechanic, who can then tell you what your engine really needs. If hes shit dont trust him saying it needs a full rebuild. Razz

where do you live?

Id be inclined to remove the engine myself and send it to a well known garage via parcelforce if i couldnt take it myself.

But is that new/replacement engine going to be any better than the one you are taking out.
So you could end up spending even more money.
How far are you talking about getting to a decent mechanic ?

And why are you prepared to trust this guy, who you say is rubbish to have got it right this time ?

I'm talking a minimum of 25 miles.

Any good mechanic around here is working for the big horseshoe shape of supercar manufacturers, racing teams etc. that circles Banbury.

And I'm going on what he said because firstly I don't have anyone else to ask and secondly I am inclined to beleive him on account of the fact that my bike ran out of 2T when I forgot to fill it up Embarassed and then got deprived when there was a bubble in the 2T line so none was getting through, which I know causes engine damage.

Changing the engine is a bit of a task in itself but is mainly straightforward, you would need a bit of help if it's a big 4 cylinder engine. Give every nut and bolt a good spray with WD40 the night before and let it soak in

It takes ages removing the exhaust, carbs, airbox, chain, gear lever. Could take you a while, pretty enjoyable job though.

Well i go 20 miles for mine and that despite many others a lot closer. You find a good one you stick to them Thumbs Up

Ask some of the one's further away, that if you could bring the engine to them after removing it what they would charge.
Removing it will be the biggest part of the labour charge.
Sorry but booked upto xmas sounds more like he just does not want the trouble of doing the work..... Who books a bike that far in advance for work needed.

I'd be inclined to get a Haines manual and do it myself. The worst that can happen is you have to take it to a mechanic, which you're considering doing anyway.

In terms of a learning curve, it would be a useful one. Only reason I'm doing it with my bike just now is its my only wheels and I detest public transport.

Soon as I get a new set of wheels, the engine's coming straight out. (Its an 850 so... Shocked )

Thumbs Up
