is it an advisable diy job?

i am fairly confident with 2 stroke engines but they are all i know really, got really in depth with the nsr's engine, 3 or 4 top end rebuilds and a complete engine transplant plus all the usual maintenance and servicing.

four strokes are a brand new bag to me as this is my first and haven't so much as had the fairings off yet.

have had a quick look at my service manual and it was a bit daunting looking at the removal of throttle bodies and all that other junk on top of the engine, also trying to learn about shims, valve lifters cam's and all that other stuff i have never had experience with.

the bikes at 14000 miles so it will need doing fairly shortly(16000 recommended)

Shims are easy just time consuming. At 16K they will probably still be in spec.

its an even easier job to CHECK them. have a go at that, and you're halfway there.

afer 25000 miles, my SRAD is still WELL within tolerance according to the haynes book of lies

(tolerance is 0.1-0.2mm on the inlet, and 0.2-0.3 on the outlet)
i couldnt even fit a 0.15 on the inlet. or a 0.25mm feeler gauge on the outlet.

They are easy to do on paper , but its fraught with issues ie dropping shims into the engine like somebody round here did (he ripped the engine apart and it lost all compression), or losing the cam chain down the cam chain tunnel or the CCT not being reset properly , I did it once on the CBR never again...

Shimmed valves tend to get tighter with wear. So you need to check that they are within the range, not just that they haven't opened up.

All the best

Camchain tensioners either work or they don't as most are automatic. If you don't have to pull the cams to change shims then best to leave it well-alone. I fyou have to pull the cams then you'll have to remove the tensioner in which case give it a visual inspection and make sure it moves without sticking.
