Today I picked up what I thought were my keys and put them in the AR125 ignition. The ignition lights came on and I started it. Glancing down I noticed these were not my keys but the keys from my mums Toyota! I then tried these same keys on my MT50 and guess what, it brought the ignition lights on and started as usual. This seems to be a bit of a major security loophole, is there any way around it and has anyone else known of it to happen?

I wouldn't worry about it. Motorcycle steering locks ain't exactly strong, and you can hotwire one in about 10 seconds.

Wouldn't bother if it was me. Any lockset you buy will be of a similar age, just get a chain & padlock. Smile

New locks similar age Exclamation Hmmm ! New locks would not be worn out and therefore the only key that should work is the one that goes with the lock until that gets worn out, then any key will work in that too.

The chain and lock is a good idea, best get two sets, and a good alarm / immobilizer.

Can you actually buy a new lockset for an AR125? I would have thought you're limited to what breakers have.

Alarm & immobiliser is OTT on an AR125. As is two set of disc locks & chains. Just chain the thing to something. It'll stop kids nicking it, and if anyone actually really wants to steal it for some reason, a second chain just means another 5 seconds with an angle grinder.

The locks on my mini are worn, at least I don't have to go through the whole set to open the door now I guess Razz

At least you have the option to use a chain and padlock.

I had a look earlier and I saw that one on Bitz For Bikes. Then again who'd want to steal an AR125 unless it was just for badness.

Not that is really anything to do with this, but did you know that any ford key can lock any ford car.

Well, maybe it is. If the same company made the ignition barrels, all their keys may be allowed to get to a certain stage.

Maybe on the early ones, but the later ones have chips in the key and igniton to stop this happening.

New locks set's very expensive i think.

I was quoted 175 for my nsr because it appears that some little scallywag tried 2 black box it (hot wiring is something to do with taking a wire from the battery to the coil, me thinks)

eeeerrr...I knew that but I just had an idea. Aston Martins use the same key "DNA" as Fords. Wink

Some bike locks are truly pants, both SR125s I've owned could be started with a screwdriver and about 5 seconds of fiddling.

My Zed starts with anything, i'm currently on my 3rd screwdriver, but i've used, the bandit keys, a 5p coin, my mates keys, my other mates key's, a piece of ally and a phone sim card, i'm looking for a switch i can just swap in, its really convenient, no key, nothing to loose, and by the time you find the right key on your bunch for your cbr, i'll be halfway up the road. (but i would recommend it if your bikes worth more that £5 though).
