Because the guy that owned it had no mechancial knowledge and didn't use it anymore. He bought it to commute in London but then got a job in Manchester so it came up here and got put in the garage.

Looking at the old M.O.T certificates he did (I think) about 500 miles on it.

I got quite a lot of history with the bike including the receipt for the original purchase of the bike. Cost the guy £2,700 Laughing

So far all the problems you have listed could be fixed in an afternoon. I highly recommend compression testing it just to make sure Thumbs Up

Yeah. I'll borrow a compression tester from work. The headlight panels are in mint condition, the rear panels aren't too bad and all the lugs are there, the lower fairings have a few broken lugs and a few scratches. the Mudguard is the worst though, at some point it must have fallen off and it's been quiet badly damaged by the tyre.

https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a376/ms51ves3/DSC00660.jpg

The throttle is now fixed, bit of WD40 in the cable splitter sorted that out.

Took the airbox off, opened it up and there isn't a filter but plenty of crap Rolling Eyes

https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a376/ms51ves3/DSC00656.jpg

The inside of the fuel tank is very clean, some bits of rust rattling about but generally very nice.

https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a376/ms51ves3/DSC00661.jpg

Checked the electrics today, powervalve is working and does it's little check when you turn the ignition on Cool All the lights are working apart from the right hand side rear indicator which has blown a bulb.

Here's a picture of that block connector I mentioned earlier.

Here's the bike in it's current state.

Started working on it today. So far I've drained all the fluids (2 stroke oil is draining now), and removed the 2 exhausts. Both exhausts were absolutely full of oil, here's a video to demonstrate how much.

Clicky

Just out of interest does this have real expansion chambers or is it another Yamaha that has a catalyst in the expansion chamber?

After a little WD40 and a rag the exhaust came up quite nicely.

https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a376/ms51ves3/DSC00667.jpg

Up the exhaust port of the right cylinder.

https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a376/ms51ves3/DSC00671.jpg

Hopefully later on I'll have a video of it running. This really depends on if it will spark which I haven't tested yet.

EDIT: It runs Mr. Green No video as I think the float bowl is leaking and the tap leaks when on prime. Plus because of the leaky tank I didn't have long to run it but it does run Very Happy

Hi

My TZR250 and my YSR50:-

https://www.alfa-pages.co.uk/TempPicture/YsrTzr.jpg

Hence why I am keeping an eye out for a TZR125 to get a set.

I pulled the top end off the TZR250 last weekend. It was showing 8 bar on the o/s cylinder and 10 bar on the n/s cylinder. Nothing obvious wrong though. Found that the pipe for the power jet on the o/s carb is missing.

Ordered a few bits. Have a pair of new standard Yamaha faired in indicators (mine is a Japanese market model with faired in indicators), just arrived. New clutch cable to go on. Couple of decent exhausts, pair of not so good exhausts and a pair of expansion chambers. Have some rebuilt forks and a shock to go on. New piece to go between the side panels behind the seat.

Could do with some spare wheels.

All the best

Keith

The YSR and TZR are like father and son Laughing Would be awesome to have the whole set.

I really want a set of expansion chambers for mine. Just got to keep an eye out on eBay.

When I got home from work I had the task of finding the hole in my tank, so out came the dremel, starting taking the paint off around the area that had stained paint and all of the sudden my dremel went through the tank, I had found the hole. I continued to get all the rust out and here it is:

https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a376/ms51ves3/DSC00672.jpg

First of all I gave the underside of the tank a clean as it was pretty manky. Came up quite nice but there are several rust patches.

https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a376/ms51ves3/DSC00674.jpg

I fixed the hole with some solder and a soldering iron. Then after I had soldered it I used my dremel to grind the solder back down to the profile of the tank.

https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a376/ms51ves3/DSC00676.jpg

https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a376/ms51ves3/DSC00677.jpg

Once I get to work I will pick up some touch up paint to repaint that area and also touch up some parts where the tank has been dented and the paint has come off.

Keith, you may be able to help me out with my weird block connector with a split pin, any ideas what it is for and why someone may have wanted to bypass it?

I've tried joining the TZR forum but they don't have automatic registration and the moderator hasn't got back to me yet.

Looking through the workshop manual it looks likely to be the side stand switch.

That was my first thought but there doesn't seem to be another block connector for it to plug into Thinking

Hi

Is the switch there at all. Likely the block connector it attaches to is part of the switch.

All the best

I just looked at my manual and went and had a gander. It is the side stand switch. The side stand switch plugs into the ignition control unit. From the ignition control unit there is a block connector that the control unit is plugged into. This has 4 wires, 2 go into the wiring loom and off somewhere (probably CDI) and then 2 that go to another block connector, the block connector that has the split pin and wire bridging it.

Tomorrow I will see what's go on around the side stand, if the switch is even there and if so what's wrong with it.

I'm just happy it's not anything really serious.

Thanks for the help Keith Karma

£1 says the side stand switch has been removed all together.

Good project. I enjoyed my TZR 250 project. Those 2mas are fun to ride aswell. They'll lift the front on power.

Hi

Well, Charlotte dropped my TZR250 barrels into the local bike engineers yesterday to get them properly measured. They are worn and are on their standard bores. Getting rebored to first oversize and new pistons.

Oh the fun of running in.

What's the mileage on your TZR?

My plan is now to spend no more than £75 to get the bike on the road. Then I would have got a running TZR250 for £250 Mr. Green

Things I have found that so far need replacing are:
Arrow Rear brake pads
Arrow Air filter
Arrow Fork seals
Arrow Battery
Arrow Rear indicator bulb

Can you get fuel tap rebuild kits for the TZR as I haven't been able to find one?

Hi

Air filter is just a piece of foam.

Yamaha sell the bits for the fuel tap. Looks like there is just a washer and O ring in the tap, part numbers 47X-24523-00 and 2G2-24534-00 respectively.

All the best

Thanks Keith. Looks like I'll be making my own air filter then.

Not done much today, just cleaned out the airbox and cleaned some panels.

Gaz, you were right, there is no sidestand switch. You're not getting a pound off me though, it can go towards the purchase of a new one.

https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a376/ms51ves3/DSC00680.jpg

I also took the tape off the damaged mudguard today to see how bad it was.

https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a376/ms51ves3/DSC00683.jpg

https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a376/ms51ves3/DSC00684.jpg

https://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a376/ms51ves3/DSC00687.jpg

What would be the best way to repair this? I was going to try and get a colour match in a rattle can, plastic weld the mudguard, sand it back down to the proflie of the mudguard and then spray and lacquer it. The only thing that worries me about this is the finish won't be brilliant.

EDIT: I also fixed the front brake lever today. It was acting like an on off switch as the lever caught on the bit where it bolts on, a little bit of Castrol grease cured that and it's nice and smooth now.

Hi

Deeply jealous of the condition of the fairing V piece.

With the mudguard I would be inclined to just try and source another. Think it would be quite difficult to repair it while having it looking good and being strong enough.

Using your parts catalogue that is so useful I have found a website (Clicky) that sells them for €61. The only problem is there are 3 and on the website it doesn't tell you what colour you are getting.

May try my method first and see how it goes, then if it's crap buy a new one. Afterall it's been taped up for god knows how long so I should think some of my plastic welding will hold it together a bit better than before.

I'm probably just going to take the tap apart and see what's going on, it only leaks when on prime though.

The V piece fairing is in pretty good condition, only thing wrong with it is where it bolts to the clock fairing it has 2 cracks on the tabs. Not that bad though and they are only minor cracks.

Also just realised that I am missing the duct that goes onto the back of the airbox, the airbox seal and the plate element. From the website above I can get them all for around €22.

Hi

Think the last 2 digits of the part number refer to the colour scheme (think NJ is blue). Yamaha part numbers are an old style system where the numbers are meaningful. Very useful.

At least you had a more productive day. Got the swinging arm out (pretty easy) and cleaned it up a bit. Reassembled with the rebuilt shock. Also stripped the rear caliper. Cannot get the rear brake to bleed through. It was OK at first (too spongy but within reason) but then lost pressure. Cannot see any leaks from the caliper and everything looked OK. I suspect the rear master cylinder seals have just packed up from the effort of pumping everything through.

Another thing to add to the shopping list.

And that site lists the fairing V piece in the right colour.

All the best

Keith

I need to change the brake fluid front and back. The back brake fluid is an awful black colour.

If the seals had gone would they not be chucking brake fluid out?

My day was pretty productive, I could have done more but got lazy and couldn't be bothered moving the bikes out the garage so I could work on mine.

Just out of interest, how have you jacked your bike up?

Hi

There are 2 main seals in the master cylinder. One inner one generates the pressure when you pull the lever / press the pedal while the other just seals the fluid in (and probably an outer dust seal as well).

I have a car engine hoist that I used to support the back of the bike.

All the best

I don't have a car engine hoist. Looks like I'll have to take the exhausts off, jack up the bike underneath the engine and tie the back wheel down to my lift. This is for when I do the fork seals.

Air filter foam is like £5 and a new TZR250 air filter is something like £5.50. I was going to use a sponge but I don't have one big enough. Might have to order one anyway Sad

Pfft, ammo box and a piece of wood straight under the expansion pipes.

I wouldn't bother replacing the side stand switch. They only go wrong. I would bridge that connector better though.

Your fairings look in excellent condition!
My TZR had k&n pod filters, but YPM racers have reported they can play absolute havok with power. Reducing it dramatically!

Did you have a read of my project? Some of the stuff might help you. (Probably not though).

Yeah I did give it a quick scan over, I'll give it a more in depth read soon.

Them 2 fairing panels are the best, I'll take a picture of the others that are not so good. The lower fairings aren't bad and have all the lugs and tabs in place. The back left panel is pretty good but the back left has 2 missing lugs that go into the rubber gromits. They both have missing tabs where the screws go through aswell so all that needs fixing.

One of my lower fairing hinges is seized aswell so I can't split them. Tried WD40 but no luck so the only other option I can think of is heat. I don't really want to use this though in case I melt the panel.
