Finding New Roads

Hi.
I ride my bike quiet a lot and I love the roads i ride on, and I feel i'm good at riding them, knowing ones coming up, knowing my speeds and fully aware of the dangerous spots so i can prepare for them.
But, I want to find some new roads to play about on now, so i can have more choice of where i play each tie i go out. insetad of always ending up on the same roads.

So, how do all of you find new roads to have a good time on?

that just tends to lead me to houses or boring roads, i want open roads ... living close to the coast and valleys in south wales it should be easy - but i dont seem to be able to find decent roads locally.

Google Maps. Look on there, pick somewhere to go where you haven't been before, then go ride. It may be good, it may be crap but it will be different.

Also ask other bikers. If you're by the Bristol channel then there are bucket loads of good roads up the Wye valley which are good enough that even us English are willing to take the risk of visiting Taffland Laughing

Try starting from Tintern Abbey and see where you end up.

i'll browse google maps tuesday night then i think, cos im having new tyres on wednesday (through to the metal now so cant go out till then) and i'll take he sat nav with me. i'm determined to fall in love with atleast one new, local road soon. just to add some change.

i think, i might have been to short sited recently, and wanting roads next to my house - instead of riding to them. so that''s what i need to change ... i have to understand i'm going to have to ride to some good roads...and once i find it - find other roads to/from them till i can get a decent route the whole way.

I'm starting to re-explore the single track back roads and bridleways that are rife where I live.

It's strange that it's been so long since I've ridden them - sticking to larger a-roads and b-roads, although having their own rewards, has become a little repetitive and they're clogged with traffic far too regularly.

The easiest solution - come across a junction, spot a road you haven't been down before, ride down it. I've really enjoyed the last couple of days, chugging along at under 50mph, enjoying the fact that I actually live in the country.

i think 'get lost' is the option i'll need to take.

i'll have to study google maps and the road map i have here to learn some of the main route, road numbers. i only know the A48! and where they go to/from, and side roads off them. that way, atleast i can go and should find my way back a bit eaier - even though i'll take sat nav, not using it would be a great plus for me.

i'll have to start riding less to destinations, and more randomly.
it would be a bit easier if i knew more bikers - but i only really know one perosn with a bike, and as he has wife and kids he isnt out that often, and i much prefer to ride with someone than on my own. i dont mind being alone, i've done thousands of 'lone miles' but to stop, have a cup of tea and a chat about the roads we've just ridden along beats stopping on my own and then carrying no seconds later.

I'd suggest taking a map rather than a sat nav, I find with maps you tend to spot interesting roads more often. I also like to turn off at random points, you'd be suprised at what you find ^^

yer i thought of that, except the only map i have is a big AA road map ..too big to take with me really. and the only small A5 size ones i've seen tend to focus on smaller areas and wont include everywhere i'm likely to go (ie: if i got for bridgend, but head out towards swansea then i'll need to buy and carry more maps) i need to find a map of wales or the UK in A5 size. i'll start looking Cool

but still ... im taking my sat nav - just in case, it's handy for petrol stations and if its late and i just want to get home its handy - or if i have an accident/break down its good for location....cos im not very good at knowing where i am.
