PostPosted: 14:46 - 25 Aug 2008    Post subject: Buying a bike with no tax, the law? Reply with quote

I'm going to pick my first bike up tomorrow and it has no tax.

I've sorted insurance out, and it's MOT'd until early next year.

How does the law regard riding it home? Can I do it as i've only just bought it?

I will tax it as soon as the documents come through - but don't want to get done for 'not displaying a valid tax disk'.

Thoughts?

Davie.

Just get the current owner to tax it.

What I did was take the slip from the V5 you get given to the post office and got tax. You don't have to wait for the actual V5.

If you get a daft wee auld women being the counter, they rarely check all the documents.

Personally, I'd risk it. How far? If it makes you feel better, I rode my Gixer from London to Glasgow untaxed.

If it's not taxed you can't ride it, I'm almost in a similar situation.

What bike is it? Laughing

Yep, you will need the insurance certificate and the MOT certificate to tax it.

Just ride it home without tax, don't ride like a dickhead and you almost certainly won't get pulled over. Thumbs Up

Description you gave was worryingly (for me) like one I'm 'aware of'. Embarassed Laughing

6 Miles I'd just ride it, plus you aint gonna be pottering along like a 50cc to be noticed.

If you already are insured some companies send your details by email as well as in the post. If they send them you by email print them off then get the green slip. I decided I wanted to ride my DT125R (was SORN and still in my brothers name) and within 10 minutes of paying insurance it was taxed and ready to go.

Remember that lack of tax will come up on the ANPR cameras that are in police traffic cars

Just passing a police car letting the camera read your number plate and they will pull you

Remember the excuse of "i just bought it" is well used, so wont carry any weight.
Not sure what the penalty is for no tax, is it just being reported to the DVLA and they can fine you up to £1000?

Bike seized there and then, also ANPR is on CCTV in allot of areas now and its a big foolish risk to take.

No road tax then that vehicle is not allowed on public roads. Simple as that.

Extreme cases can see it crushed, a back tax penalty of up to £1000 and points on license.

But real world is a £30, 60, 90 or 120 squid fine and an earful from the officer if you're excuse is good enough. (pr he's gullible enough)

I wouldn't listen too much to the 'scare extremists'. Reality is you can probably ride it back and get home safely.

Take it home via the back roads and you'll be okay.

Personally I would carry the documents with me including the receipt and then ride it the 6 miles. If you are unlucky enough to get stopped in that short distance you'd have to be doubly-unlucky to get reported having produced evidence you had just bought it.

This is for tax BTW, if you get caught riding without insurance it's pants-down time.

Reality is you can probably ride it home with no insurance, tax, or any of that crap without being stopped by the police. And then continue to ride around for a long time without any of the legal requirements still without being stopped by the police.

Chances are you're not going to be picked up by some ANPR CCTV system, chances are you're not going to get stopped by some cop car cos their ANPR picked you up, chances are you're not going to get stopped unless you're drawing attention to yourself somehow.

Blah blah blah, that'd be illegal so don't do it, the safety nazis will cry at night because people like you riding around without tax or insurance is how fluffy kittens get killed!! Shocked

on a selfish level, you can also get a conviction and a fine

admittedly the fine for riding with no insurance is probably less than the cost of insurance for a year, but thats not the point Smile

I had a situation like that quiet recently. I just rode it home with all the docs under the seat. Didn't get stopped, but if I did I was getting ready to make with the puppy dog eyes. Cool

But if you check your insurance documents the vehicle has to be legal on the roads . . No tax is not legal so insurance is void. Wink

As said you can take the risk, but don't moan if you are pulled and the bike is seized(mandatory) plus the fine and storage/recovery fees.

Sorry but that's not true. No tax won't void your insurance.

I road the TDM and the GS for about 1 month each before I texed them, (mixture of din't have papers working funny hours and couldn't be bothered) and I never got caught.

I also haven't 'displayed' a tax disc for 2 years. (There under my seat.)
