PostPosted: 09:45 - 25 Aug 2008    Post subject: Engine bars or crash bungs - which should I buy? Reply with quote

On my last 2 bikes, i've had R & G.

However i've heard on the ER6n that there has been issues with them. This is from the ER6 forum.

Now i've seen that Rennntec engine bars only cost £62 which is simmilar to R&G anyway. The other option is to spend a tonne and get the proper Kawasaki ones.

Any advice here. ? Anyone used Renntec bars?? I am tempted.

If you don't mind people looking at you funny I'd go for bars, even with standard R&Gs people have problems with them causing more damage.

On an ER6 I'd get the bars. Personally, I think the bungs are only useful if you're in the habit of dropping the bike.

Personally I wouldn't bother with either as you can buy engine cases off fleabay for a few quid, probably cheaper than bars or bungs.

Its not so much the cost of replacment parts, its the fact that if you bin it hard you might damage the engine casing to the point of dumping oil, then you cant ride it home.

Id much rather mangle some engine bars than my engine in a crash.

Mostly meant for sports bikes, but it might be worth seeing if you can get or adapt some "Race Railz/Race Rails" to fit, look much neater and offer same protection is either of above. Thumbs Up

Thanks for the advice so far.

With the ER6n having expensive indicators.

Do you think engine bars/r&gs are likely to protect them also.

I have crashed the ER5 with R&G and just picked it up.

Whereas dropping the Z doing a U turn (with R&G). The engine casing still cracked and I had to be recovered.

The bars are what saved my bike in my off. They slide down the crash barrier then saved it as it flipped down the road. The right bar was badly damaged but saved the engine from being destroyed.

The force of the impact did sheer the engine mount off on the right side where they where attached but £15 later at an alloy welder and jobs and good un. Just rang and ordered one new bar and away I went (well after a few months my arm needed to heal Laughing )

My bro took these for me while i was in hospital. You can just see on the second picture the where the mount bolt is the crack.

They stick out far enough to protect most things when you drop it bit not enough to look shite IMO.

Crash bungs would have done nothing in my accident except look pretty, then with only TPFT I would have been looking at buying a new bike with still 2 years on my loan for this one left!

Crash bungs on a faired bike. Bars on a naked.

I have a set of bars on the GS500. Although I've just taken them off to get them powder coated, so it's guaranteed I'll drop it now.

In my opinion bars offer more protection, and will protect more than once. Bungs are very much disposable.
But then again, a mate of my Dad's got his foot caught in a crash bar during a crash and it shattered his ankle.

I have one naked bike, one faired. Bars on the former, bungs on the latter. The way it should be.

Bungs look good to me, roughly £100 from the dealer, not a lot more than the bars!

Looking at them pics Catherine(read about your crash back then too) I'm surprised how much protection them and the bar ends offer, and still don't really lose any style points(on that bike) Wink

Only thing with this type of protection I have an issue with is other bits exposed, like the tail unit etc. Then you can get "gadgets" to add onto your bike near the chain adjustor's etc in this criteria. Thumbs Up

Bungs look better, bars are probably better on the whole. Would the bars give a problem when cleaning?

In an accident engine bars can bend the frame if they hit the deck hard enough.

Or if the stupid police wont listen and call there own one you pay £450 to get your bike back!!!!!!!

I was livid!

My GIANT top box or blimp as the other half calls it saved my tail section lol! Well funny, its scraped to buggery now but it saved the bike!
My god though it was big, even bigger than my back side and thats saying something lol!

I love the bars, they saved it when I dropped it in the works car park once and as I said in my off.

Once we had unscrewed the engine mount bolt it went bing! and the bar shot out to the right so it must have been under some force when it was screwed in no wonder it cracked the mount.

Bars all the way!

Oh the shoes - my brothers Croc Off roads LOL!

Bless him

I'd crashed twice with r&g's and will always buy them, the only points that touched down on the Speed Four where the bungs the belly pan and the exhaust indicators levers frame engine etc. were all untouched.

On the TDM I dropped it after doing an endo because I was too harsh with the front brake. Beacaue I had no forward momentum when I crashed it rolled over the bung and damaged the panel and lever. The indicator was scraped but still perfectly functionable so was the mirror. The exhaust touched down but after the previous experiance I had also bought the R&G protectors.

Very minimal damage both times and I will definately buy there products again.

I had engine bars on the bandit hire bike I had, they would bottom out if i decided to lean some on it.

I had a thundercat that had crash bungs on when i crashed and although the bungs made the damage a LOT less, the fairings still ended up cracked and the engine casings were still pretty badly damaged.

bars would definitely offer a lot more protection - so is thats the main focus of you getting them then go for bars.

bungs would be fine if your just worried about drop the bike while walking it etc

but im a tart and prefer the look of bungs so thats probably what ill go for in future Mr. Green

Well I ordered some bars from Renntec , paid online etc.

Only to get an email saying they were out of stock for 4-5weeks.

So not too sure what i'm going to do now.
