Looking at buying this cbr 400 for £300 maybe less pending information. Currently I know, it has a snapped exhaust just after the 4 downpipes join and I can pick up this part for £200 for new downpipes, or less if I just get a new bit of pipe. Needs new front and back tyres, has no mot or tax and the front fairing is broken as shown in the picture. He also does not have the V5 but just has to send off for it.

The information that I am going to ask for is year, mileage, last time it was run ect ect and I believe I can probally get the price down to £200 (not on its own, as part of a deal).

This is the race fairings that I will probally put on it.

What do you guys think? What else do I need to ask? This is going to be a project to get mint for when I am 17 and I am ideally looking to spend no more than £1000 overall if I can.

Is it worth it?

Cheers,

M

EDIT: Just got some more information about it, it is a F reg (1988?), he couldn't tell me the milage as he wasn't with the bikes. He said they both run well and he has ridden them both and offered me a go Laughing .

there will probably be more wrong with it than listed that he either knows or doesnt and it will have been thrased and raped.. but 400cc for 17 year olds will most likely give you better insurance quotes unless its an import (which it probably is). But from my experience, I'd go for a 600 for a first bike and restrict it Thumbs Up
even if you buy an older one and save up for the insurance Wink

lulz coming from someone who owns a CBR125 Laughing

Oh, teh bodykit is for an NC29 (Dullarm), the bike you are thinking of buying is an NC23 so I doubt it'll fit without some butchery. I'm not going to comment on what I think of these aftermarket body kits for 400's as each to their own.

Yeah, sorry I was on a different page and thought it was the NC23.

This is the fairing kit I would probally put on it https://www.k-conversions.co.uk/index.php?main_page=popup_image_additional&pID=2&pic=0&products_image_large_additional=images/large/IMGP1902_01_LRG.JPG Razz

But anyway, that is just mods, what about the bike?

It has done 36000 miles I now know. Is it worth it for the price?

Just found out that the cbr has 36000 Km, thats only 22000 miles.

Starting to look pretty good for the price.

Personally I find those Tyga kits an abomination Thumbs Down Sick , but if that's what you want to do then fine.

NC23's are really getting on these days, most are old and tired and I'd be concerned about the potential for it to turn into a money pit tbh.

Having no MOT would concern me (though I have bought 2 bikes with no MOT) especially if the seller just 'hasn't got round to MOT-ing it - but it'll fly through etc' Thinking

These things can turn expensive. That said, the price is low considering the prices the NC23's seem to go for (overpriced in my opinion, but demand driven).

However on the flip side, if the price is so low that he could make more by breaking it for spares, one might wonder why he doesn't, ie most of the bike is shagged.

Go over it with a fine toothcomb before you wave your dollars at him, and do some sums wrt what you'll need to spend. Factor in postage, labour (unless you fit tyres etc yourself), gaskets etc (it all adds up) and even your own time, which can knacker up projects that take ages.

Sounds like it would take a hell of a lot of time and money sorting it out. I just bought a NC23 for £520 and all it needs is tax, front tyre and a battery. Keep looking I'd say.

Looks a good bike for that money you can't go wrong. If it did turn out to have a major problem, you would easily get you money back by breaking it.

If it is accident free, I would buy it.

Could be a steal.

Thing is, if you are going to rely on this bike for transport - then walk away. If you are looking at it because you realy like them, and dont mind spending a lot of time / money making it right - as a bit of a project / labour of love - then do it.

My thoughts are that you want this bike so you have a sports bike and your looking at a £300 one because you dont have that much money available. At which point, just walk away. Save up a bit more and try again when you can afford something worth while.

I also realise however, that if the above is the case, then any advice given to you regarding walking away from it, will fall on deaf ears. This is fine, as you will undoubtedly wish you had listened to us a few months down the line Laughing
