PostPosted: 18:50 - 28 Aug 2008    Post subject: Caught Speeding by Radar Gun Reply with quote

Hi,

Earlier this evening i got caught out by a hand held ProLaserIII doing just over 60 in a 40, on the A4 Between Chiswick and Hounslow,

I know i am a very bad man, the kittens etc, but that aside

How accurate are these ProLaserIII guns on bikes? i heard some laser guns give false readings on bikes?,

The traffic police was not too condesending, but was wholly unflexible, he said i was 2mph over the ACPO regulated speed which he could let me off with 3 points on the spot... Yay another win for powers of discresion and common sense.

So i have been reported for the offence of excessive speed,

I asked the traff pol when the last time the gun was callibrated and if it was accurate on bikes, he said it was officially tested in june but they do daily checks before and after each shift, and that it was accurate on bikes..

If, at this point you are getting ready to click reply and say something along the line of dont do the crime if you cant do the time etc then dont bother im just looking for any helpfull advice, this was not outside a school at 3:30pm, it was on a 4 lane road and i am more annoyed at my lack of observation to see him hiding behind the lamppost and the fact that before the ride i said to myself dont go out today, what good will come of it, and then when out decided to go the long way home right into them,

Such a lazy and pathetic way to get done....

Sad

Hi

While they may not be accurate against bikes, their accuracy is accepted by the courts.

All the best

What was the stretch of road like where you got caught?

straight, curved, flat etc

weather clear or rain?

was the copper outside of his vehicle with high visability clothing on in clear view of road?

Yeah they need to produce a daily proof that is has been checked on the day in question.

Best of luck mate

I got done by a lazer gun last week. I didn't want to dispute it since they got me done for 44 in a 30mph zone - having said that I assumed it was 40mph and then looked back again. 3 points and license in the post was acceptable for me because i knew that chatting about disputing their accuracy and calibration will probably land me in deeper shit considering that the rest of my bike wasn't particularly legal.

Again poor observation and situational awareness got me nicked... he was parked in a layby, clear as day, but i was focusing on chasing a distant R1!

I'm pretty sure that their radar/laser guns are accurate enough, although at THAT speed you were doing, i probably would have disputed it as well.

Im kicking myself now for stopping, if i just gave it some and vanished that would have probably been it, i got complacent about getting stopped, i have bullshitted my way out of quite a few points and my mind dident register the speed gun. I think ill just take the points, maybe contest on some grounds if it doesent cost anything to do so.

Its a real kick in the teeth that he even said i was 2mph over what the ACPO states they can use discretion for, i mean 2mph, has common sense gone out the window? did it ever exist?,

3 points by the side of the road i would have accepted as i got done, why are the courts now going to be clogged up with this bullshit?

6 points and a £200 pound fine is roughly what i am looking at, for the extra expense and hassel are another way this country taxes us.

I have learned one thing from it though, next time i'll think twice about stopping...

Police laser guns work by reflecting a laser beam off your car and computing your speed from that. Most of a car or motorcycle is not very reflective to a laser gun. By far the brightest thing on a car is the license plates, which are now made reflective for just this purpose.

The Courts accept them as accurate regardless of the truth so I think you are pretty hammered but I'd contest it if I were you.

People have been released from the Court system when causing enough grief. At the very least they have to supply you the video evidence.

By aiming at the wall and pulling the trigger whilst panning with the device we managed to get a reading of 58mph from the stationary wall - enough to get three points and a fine in urban areas.

Dornoch case deferred amid speed gun doubts

There is a court case challenging the Prolaser 3 speed gun, due to take place in Portee on march 26th.

The article was on the front page of The Northern Times and weekly Journal for Sutherland and The North.

The arguement is that the device has never had a statutory instrument prescribed

Not sure how you get access to the records of Court proceedings, but there could be help for you there.

its reasons like this that i never speed around town, and only ever do after having done a full 360 degree check... twice.

i sometimes have lapses, and just as im about to speed i usually see a police car tucked away somewhere and end up thinking ''fuck, that was lucky''.

today i could have been a bit fucked though... raced a skyline haha, i was suprised! its the first car i havnt COMPLETELY dicked. it took about 5 seconds to do it as it was accelerating past about 30mph faster than i was going.

Was thinking about this the other day, whilst grumbling through my teeth,....and read about these laser jammers:

https://www.m-99.co.uk/Laser_Interceptor/laser_interceptor.html

I think they state that they are parking sensors or something like that, which wouldn't really work as an excuse if you get done on yer bike for it......"er yes officer I have difficulty parking my bike....er because...err....oh yes I'm partially sighted.....no...I mean er....I've not taken my test...no....er...wait."

Also is there any truth in the whole "weave about like your warming your tyres pre race" theory that the laser can't hit you?? Sounds a bit silly, bit like street hawk or something....

I got done in June by one of these guns. The pig was sitting just after where the speed dropped from 40 to 30! He told me I was doing 44 in a 30, I spoke nicely to him, but eventually he told me if I was doing 40 he would have let me off. I didn't argue as I actually thought I was going faster than 44. I just had to take my documents to cop shop and pay the fine to Blackburn and got my licence back with 3 points on it. There was none of this going to court shit for me on this occasion.

I've got a garage door opener on the car. Its a LE-850 which uses the same gallium arsanide diode the pro-laser and other guns use.

It's very easy to fit and not be seen without a complete stripdown and has saved my ass too many times Smile

Once activated it fires a beam for 5 seconds then automatically turns off then resets ready to go again.

I'm seriously considering swapping it to the bike with the increase of laser plod hiding behind bus shelters etc just where the limit changes.

Be warned though that there are some cheaper ones that use LED's which while they do work do last as long and can let you down.

I always thought in speeding cases you could ask to see the calibration certificate that was used to check the accuracy of the bit of kit used to nail you.
May be worth enquiring about that - especially if the gun used was a bit iffy with bikes to start off with.
Good luck anyway.

forget it.
from personal experience i can tell you the judges just don't give a sh1t about anything to do with calibration of equipment.

my defence had everything from the wrong location on the paperwork to improper use of equipment and not wearing high vis jackets etc.
I read up on the ACPO guidelines which stated that speed measurement devices should be used to confirm an officers opinion that a vehicle is speeding.
In most cases they just just zap anything that moves which can cause problems with other traffic moving the other way.

best bet is to invest in the garage door opener

Similar situation here except for the fact it was in a 30 that had recently been reduced to 20. As the road used to be half 20 and half 30 they didn't put any new signs up - they just took down the '20 ends' one.

I had no idea so my previously shiny clean license now has 3 points on it for doing 32mph. Evil or Very Mad

There are loads of rules concerning 20 limits. Many of which they don't bother adhering to when they implement them.

All the best

I did think I'd have a reasonable case for taking it to court as it wasn't all clear that the limit had been reduced. It didn't seem worth the hassle (and potentially worse outcome) in the end, but I retain the right to be bitter as hell about it. Mad

Hi

Put it this way, were there repeater signs or traffic calming in place?

All the best

There is traffic calming further up the road unfortunately. None at the point where they zapped me though.
