Hi

Ouch, sounds like nasty damage you suffered there. Hopefully a few bits might be salvagable (alternator, etc), but probably not much. I take it that it has snapped somewhere just under the little end bearing?

Good luck getting the new engine fitted.

All the best

Keith

What exactly is a con-rod?

Excuse me I just have to get this bit out of the way before I tell you.

Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Sorry...There we go, thats better! It comes from me studying mechanical engineering! Wink

The con rod (or Connecting rod) is the piece of metal that connects to the crankshaft at one end, and to the piston at the other. The Gugeon pin goes through the piston and the small end of the con rod and holds them together acting like a hinge. The small end bearing provides the friction reducing element here.

At the other end of the con rod is the big end (because it looks the same as the small end only bigger Rolling Eyes )which connects to the crankshaft with the big end bearing in between.

So if you threw a rod, then I would imagine that the seperation of piston and con rod would cause some spectacular fireworks! Smile

Unlikely for the big end to punch a hole - Maybe the fatter end of the condon punched a hole though. Is the hole in the barrel or in the block?

Aww I'm sorry craig. I didn't mean to make fun of you.
Maybe I just assume that people already know about engines when they buy bikes, but thinking about it thats silly. You don't need to know how it works to ride it.

I do though!!! Smile

Maybe I know something that you don't! Wink

Foggy could have had any engine configuration for his petronas bike, and loads of engineers told him that a triple was the best possible engine configuration for a bike.

So Razz

Hi

And exactly how successful has that been? Its best use last year was to barbecue the rider.

All the best

According to MCN Honda look keen to make use of a triple to replace their V5 in the RCV. Although Honda probably have the engineers to make a triple succesful where others have failed.

Didn't you pay £400 to have the fork seals, chain, sprocket and front wheel bearings changed? Laughing

I didn't expect it to be 400 quid, and they also put new brake pads in, bled the brakes, cleaned a load of corrosion from within the swingarm and put new fork oil in. The Bearings on their own cost over £100 plus VAT and Despite my enjoyment of all things mechanical, I don't have time to do that stuff really (before the trackday anyway).

Plus, I'm an engine guy and I don't trust myself with things that could seriously affect the handling of my bike when I am doing a trackday at cadwell park soon! Wink

Next time, If I'd have known it was going to take six hours of labour at £40 plus vat I'd do it meself! Laughing

Even so, the bike does feel infinitely better in corners and If you want a job done well you can either cock it up yourself, or pay someone that you trust to do it properly! Smile

And as far as triple's go, No one who has commented about them has ever ridden one (except maybe Keith - I don't know. He didn't disrespect Triumph Triples though)

so Razz

Very Happy
