Hilarious! That's the only word for it (although I can think of a few others). I don't, as a rule, use this blog to report private meetings and conversations, but here's what happened when I attended yesterday's meeting (in Brussels) of "EU experts, civil society and social partners to support the Commission's Impact Assessment on the forthcoming initiative on smoke-free environments":

The great irony is that our forefathers went to fight a big war against a fascist regime...

Those who survived came back home and setup a fascist regime back home.....

I'm just curious as to who might still be under the impression that the EU is anything even approaching democratic or open?

UKIP were a bunch of nutters but the EU was one thing they were spot on about.

There'll always be people who want absolute power, doesn't matter how many Reichs you get rid of a new one will always pop up in some form or another. The European Union is little different in that it systematically removes civil liberties, it may be starting small, relatively speaking, but doesn't everything.

Your opinion on UKIP aside (I have no interest in starting a debate over UKIP's policies and I am sure that you do not either), I must ask, why did you refer to UKIP in the past tense?

The fact that they appear to have a political footprint smaller than mine.

Many of their policies seemed quite sensible - I was referring to them as individuals, I have vague memories of most of their spokesmen appearing to be frothing nutters. Nutters with a very good point though, it must be said.

Their footprint is depressingly small, they actually came behind Labour in the recent by-election here. That kind of took the wind out of my sails a bit. Very unsatisfying.

They will continue to get my vote, but its clear nothing will ever change, and no amount of shouting, foot stomping or attempting to get your point across will change a damn thing.

If people have the choice laid out in front of them, but still choose the head in the sand option, what can you do.

Most people are stupid, or happy plodding along in their ignorance.

UKIP was setup by the government. It was supposed to be a protest vote sponge. Looks like the plan worked pretty well.

Where's your evidence for this?

Their main point was about the EU consitution/Lisbon Treaty, neither of which we had a say in anyway so their preaching about what it actually meant was meaningless as it was going to go ahead whether we liked it or not. So yes it couldlve been a government plan to suck votes away from the real opposition parties, but it may not have been.
