To be honest he just looks like an ordinary working class lad. No trackie bottoms with stripes. And what he is wearing aren't tucked into white socks, so he fails initiation rights as a full on scall straight away. No ultra cheap, tacky Argos pound shop "gold" chains, and not a knuckleduster of sovereign rings to be seen. No Airmax/Scummax logoed trackie or shell top.

Not a JJB bag in sight anywhere even. No baseball cap at ridiculously odd angles, stupid arm movements or retarded finger contorting hand signals. No bottles of "White Storm" either or whatever el cheapo, we waved an apple near the factory so that counts dunnit, 5% "cider". His clothes don't look ragged or looked good when new off the market a year ago. No gangstoh, niggoh or thug look at all.

One thing any scall couldn't hide tho, is the way he talks. If every sentence starts "Eyar" and the conversation has repeated uses of "Yo" and "Safe" then run away very fast. "Eyar no yo, it woz me bruvvohz.... onnist, ee's in jay-yull for taxxin an offie, no wotta meeeen?"

Tho to be fair I live in Shameless-land (or was till they cried off and built a set in Wythenshawe), the land of tracksuits and steel windows. I only get to see the full on scum, not the posh subtle variations.

Chav as a word was certainly used around Manchester in 81/82 although at the the time it just referred to knobhead lads around town who thought they were trendy wearing Pringle jumpers and the like. Probably not that different from what Liverpool called scallies. Round here no one uses chav any more, scally scum is more correct. We seem to be infested with them. When you go outside the city there seems to be far less, tho maybe the dress code is more relaxed elsewhere, so they don't stick out as much.

Although the kids can be expected to dress like full on scumbags, mid 40s men with tracky bottoms tucked in white socks etc aren't uncommon around here, neither are tracksuited, badly tattoed minging grandmas come to think of it. We breed quality scum for generations, Mendel would be proud.
