I purchased COD4 today for the PC, mainly for the multiplayer as I've played through the singleplayer before.

I was a huge fan of COD2, and became pretty good at the multiplayer, especially on Toujane.

Which level on COD4 would be the best for me to start and familiarize myself with?

Lots of things to think about at first isnt there? When theres level 10 gold crossers running after you and stuff lol.

I would say I quite an average player but Ive been giving it some stick the last few months so I'll try and help you!

Weapon selection and kit - try to have a varied loadout for your custom slots. I'll normally have a rifle, a sub, a machine gun, a shotgun and a snipe. Dont be afriad to try different weapons!! I normally use 3 special grenades (or normal ones), stopping power and then martyrdom for my perks too.

I play a lot of headquarters. On those people are focused on the goal and some of the time its not like a deathmatch, you can often be picking people off who are running for the base. These games will teach you the maps and get you some points under your belt!

Before I get too long winded about it Im going to cut this short. I tend to run around a lot, I dont like staying in one place, always be ready with your dagger, dont forget to cook grenades before you throw them (hold the button down a bit longer), try throwing a stun grenade followed by a normal grenade into a crowded room, the RPD is a good all round gun to start with.

Cant think of anything else right now though Wink

The guns i used the most on cod 4 were

M16 - red dot sight - Stopping Power - extreme condition - 3 frags
Takes a while to get used to, good long distance burst fire.

Mini Ak47 - red dot sight - Stopping Power - extreme condition - 3 frags
Great close up high recoil so not so good long range.

If you are rushing about a smg would be the best type of weapon if you are camping (waiting about) then a longer range more powerful weapon is recommend. Different maps mean different guns, different playing styles = different guns.

IE i dont really use silencer but is some maps it comes in very handy.

Learn the common things everyone does. If they run into a room with 2 doors, know what one they're coming out off and throw a grenade there.
If you see flashing in a room cook a grenade so that it'll blow as soon as it lands in there.
Don't run out in the open, always try and be near cover.
Get a gun your comfortable with, as you kill more people you unlock red dot sight etc.
Apply necessary Perks that really help you. Martydom being an obvious one as I get alot of kills with this.

But the best way to learn is by playing it.

mostly its a game to learn through experience and just getting better

There is no best gun, different weapons are better at different things.

When you are a bit unskilled, I would recommend a sub machine gun like the mp5, and only tackling people when they are fairly close. It doesnt matter too much if you miss with your first shot, as the recoil is low, so you can re aim and keep firing.

I would recommend 3 round bursts rather than spraying a whole clip. Re-aiming between each burst.

If you are still fighting, and have run out of bullets, its usually better to switch to pistol rather than take the time to reload the gun.

Play with headphones, so you can find people from the sound of footsteps or gun fire. Most people just head straight for the action, but if you approach from the side or go round and go in from behind, you will find people and they arent facing your way.

Its much better to shoot someone in the back as they have less chance of spotting you and firing back.

You have inspired me to go off and play COD 4.

Another tips is if you want to advance through the levels, and get more weapons and powerups, play the free for all levels which have huge body counts where you kill 10 ppl in ten seconds and die 10 times in ten seconds. Your levels rise by kills.

Watch how other people play and you will learn quite a bit.

Agree about watching how other people play. Watch the killcam when you die and see how and from where you were killed.
Maybe start a private match on your own to learn the maps
or play some sort of team game and follow one of the more experienced players so you can see what they do.
Free for all maybe is a good way to get kills and a lot of people start there but you may get killed so much you might not get any kills.
I have gone back and played free for all the last couple of nights for a laugh and to complete some challenges. It makes the new players feel good to see that a 10th prestige maybe got less than 10 kills but the ones that died didn't like the killcam seeing the way i killed them.

COD4 multiplayer is like CounterStrike innit? Simple strategies:
  • run-run-run-shoot-die-spawn
  • run-run-die-spawn
  • shoot-shoot-run-run-shoot-die-spawn
Rinse, repeat. Wink

I looooved COD4 one-player story/missions, but the online version is appalling. Give me Battlefield (2 or 2142) or America's Army any day...

I haven't played it for a while (CoD4), but I stuck with the russian LMG, no fancy sights, had a fore-grip, and some health attributes.

By finding good spots, with reasonable flank cover, I could pretty much ensure a consistent slaughter against the fvcktards with the fancy crap and high experience. If you get sucked into the default game-play style (headless chicken) you'll die repeatedly. Be patient and go very slow, that way you'll already be way ahead of 90% of the other players.

I use either

Mp5 Silenced (red Camo)
Gold Desert Eagle
Frag x 3
Stopping power
Steady Aim

(50 kills 4 deaths!)

or

Ak47 Red dot sight (blue camo)
Gold Deagle
Rpgx2
Stopping power
Steady aim

(25 kills no deaths!)

The best way to improve at cod4 is practice and then practice some more! I played it from when it came out and kept playing it until someone at work infected me with the world of warcraft strain of hiv. Laughing
Take a look at this website for some tips on what guns to use https://www.progaming-tips.com/cod4-guns.html
My personal favourite gun is the m4 carbine with the standard sight. I use deep impact and stopping power perks and pretty much kicked arse in every server i joined.
Once i got to level 55 i could carry two main weapons, i used to carry the m4 carbine with grenade launcher and the g3, also with nade launcher so that means you have lots of nades. Twisted Evil The g3 i used for long range shots and if the m4 ran out of ammo if i stayed alive for a long time which i normally did. Razz
If it was a big open map i would bust out the m60e4 and use a front grip for better aim and if you went prone you could really do some damage.
Whats your cod name, i will install it on my laptop and give you a game.
Another good tip is to wear a headset when playing cod4, the sounds are pretty good and tell you when someone is near you. Thumbs Up

I play it on PS3, but it's basically the same. I usually tend to roll with the M4, or RPD for mid range work, MP3/shotgun for close range, and the .50 cal sniper rifle if it's unlocked for long range, or just the first sniper rifle if it isn't unlocked.

O and setting traps with the C4 then blowing people up on Ambush as they walk past never gets boring. C4ing places you know are fairly busy is always a good tactic. Wink

If you really want to get some soo techniques quickly play it on the hardcore mode, it's much less forgiving and normal mode seems like a piece of piss in comparison.

I also want to sport facial hair like Capt Price. Laughing

But before the knife can make its unholy noise there is a small click and the claymore triggers blowing your body back out the window.

Well, 14 hours of game play later I've got myself up to level 25.

To begin with i used the MP5 as it seems to be a good all rounder for beginners. I unlocked the red dot sight, then started experimenting with different guns. At the moment i like using the M4, again with red dot. I've unlocked the scope too but i'm not a fan of using that.

My favourite levels are Backlot, Crash and Crossfire (TDM or free for all). I've come top a few times, but admittedly not with a very good kills to deaths ratio. Knowing the layout of the levels really does seem to be the key thing, together with constantly being on the move.

What are other peoples favourite levels?
