Everything you know about the early Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa's (99/00) and the Honda CBR1100XX Super blackbird (98/99). Pro's and con's of each, which is the better buy, etc. Looking to spend around £3k on one. Have narrowed my search down to these two bikes so all help appreciated.

Many Thanks.

i don't know if this is true, but worldwide the big leading seller of a big sports/tourer kinda bike was the honda blackbird. then suzuki came out with their own big sports/tourer bike called the hayabusa. hayabusa is a peregrine falcon in japanese. they prey on many animals and one of them is the blackbird.

I heard that too except I heard Hayabusa was a bird eating spider.

Japanese Exchange Student says: Hayabusa is like a violent bug thingy, maybe a spider, English is his 4th language.

i love my busa trike
i think the bird would be more comfy on long rides but the busa is faster
you should also add the zx12 to your list its another great and very fast bike
for me theres nothing in it between the zx12 and busa its more down to witch you think looks the best

Both suffer from Cam Chain Tensioner issues. The Busa also had issues with collapsing sub-frames, although all should have been replaced by now. Wouldn't it be better to ask on a hayabusa forum since it's such a huge cult bike?

Na, 'cos they'll be a tad biased!

Here the OP should get both sides the argument.

What are you actually planning to do on the bike?

If you want to go Europe-munching I'd choose very differently from if you want to do some drag racing, or want to pose in the Boxhill carpark.

As said above, don't count out the ZX-12R. Faster than a stock Busa don't ya know Very Happy Can get them cheaper too, especially if you don't want a Blue and white Busa (They are cheaper than red Sad)

Well i have owned both and covered many miles on both..

If you want a bike that will retain its money and is only going to be ridden the odd day here and there then I would go for the HAYABUSA, end of.

IF your looking for a bike to use daily, comfy, easy to maintain, leave a bit grubby and be easier on the neck muscles then deffo the Blackbird.

The finish on the Honda is superior to the BUSA, the BUSA also suffered from the rear alloy subframe collapsing yet these are an easy fix and cheap to replace.

BUSA is far quicker, better handling and WILL hold its money, the engine is not as smooth but the gearbox is better.

Blackbird is a ballistic sofa, very comfy, very quick and almost reliable. Watch out for electric gremlins with the BIRD, the wiring loom is suspect and its usually the connector plug under the N/S rear of the tail section, they corrode and cause alsorts of issues.

Hope it helps

I think Johnny's hit the nail on the head there. I was in the same position a few months ago, i.e blackbird V hayabusa. I know that the bird is very well built and very quick, also very comfortable and capable of touring two up plus luggage. I also knew at the time that I wasnt the worlds biggest suzuki fan (still not TBH) but the busa was also very capable.

If the busa didnt exist I would have the blackbird any day of the week. For me though I love my suzuki, its comfortable for my bad back for one and its very quick. It also has that special feel to it. I know its a bit tarty but in the carpark at work (we have our own bike car park, known affectionately as 'the showroom'!) there are four blackbirds and one hayabusa. I know which bike gets looked at because I can see from where I sit at work. The busa doesnt look its age, for me the blackbirds age is telling. On the other hand, the fact theres 4 blackbirds and only one busa may say something about which is the better choice Laughing

I would doubt whichever you go for you will be dissappointed.

A good bible for the hayabusa is www.ukbusas.org

Thumbs Up

I was faced with this dilemma about 4 weeks ago, but I included the ZX-12R in the mix after a little research.I compared the specs, prices and reviews and settled on the 12.
I'm 6' and 19.6st and the 12 is perfectly comfy for me, but all 3 bikes were. I chose the 12 because it was better value for money than both others. I could get an older bird for less, but usually with more miles or a similar age Busa for more ££.
I got a 2k1 ZX-12R with Hugger, DB Screen, Crash Bungs, Scottoiler, Digi Gear indicator and Datatool Veto Evo alarm for £3k with 6 months warranty and breakdown. Cheapest non-blue Busa was around £3k with more miles, 2 years older and nowhere near the extras.
Was an easy decision after looking at the facts.
I love Busas but the practical part of me just couldn't justify the extra expense.
I'd go for a Blackbird if you're looking for cheap, big and fast - 1997 for £2k!!

I personally can't reate the ZX-12 highly enough, but some bikes just fit the rider. Give them all a go and see what you like.
