Agreed I do enjoy Dan Browns books, I rarely read fiction but his stuff does make you go "ahhh just one more chapter".

At the moment Im reading a Biology textbook to re-aquaint myself with genetics as its been a while, though I wouldnt recommend it lol.

Slash - The Autobiography, is a crackin read IMO

Mr Nice - I think this is great, an educated, well read oxford graduate becoming one of the worlds biggest drug smugglers, very entertaining.

Derren Brown - Tricks of the mind, I love his shows and seen him live twice so this gives a little insight into how he puts his stuff together, I find this stuff really interesting but thats me, others dont share my enthusiasm

American Psycho by Brett Easton Ellis - If you saw and liked the film you absolutely must read this, if the film had been made to match the material in the book it would have never ever seen the light of day due to the bloody distrubing nature of it

The "Chopper" books - Once again, if you;ve seen the film, then the books he wrote are right good for a giggle, take with a large pinch of salt as he does make some pretty big claims, non the less its very funny.

The Satanic Bible - Anton LaVey. Seriously, if ever a 'religion' made sense to me, then this one is it, forget what you think you know about it and give it a read its very insightful into human nature.

Anything by Carlos Castaneda - Again, whether true or not, I found enchanting.

Christ I could go on and on but I think that'll be all for now!

Just finished Rocket Men. Pretty good book, although i'd sooner it had just been about Ron. I've nothing against Leon, but I'd sooner read about his career when he's older.

I also bought Jamie Whithams book, but i'm saving this until later in the month when I go on holiday. I've been waiting for whit to write a book for years!. Really looking forward to this one.

Once i've read that i'm sticking with autobiographies, but moving onto music. Rick Wakeman really cracks me up so i've just got to have a read of his book.

Am I the only person in the UK who thinks that Dan Browne is a really crap author? Fair play to him for stirring up such a groundswell of positive PR for The Da Vinci Code, but it was poorly written, with 2D wooden characters and a plot that relied too heavily on a mish-mash of conspiracy theories and tedious urban myths.

Like the Harry Potter series, it was another 'must read' book for the middle classes that turned out to be a crushing disappointment. Unlike Harry Potter, it doesn't have the cute Emma Watson to dig it out of the hole.

I've recently been reading a few of the Patrick Ryan 'Jack Aubrey' series, (you may remember the Russel Crowe film Master and Commander that was based on them) and listening to the Alexander Kent 'Bolitho' series on my mp3 player.

If you prefer sci fi to Napoleonic naval combat, then anything by Richard Morgan or Neal Asher is well worth a look, especially the latters 'Cormac' series - sheer class, and about 47,000 times better than Dan Browne.

Me thinks it depends on the kind of reader you are.. myself i will sit and read technical manuals all day, but a piece of fiction has to grab my attention by the end of the first few pages and must keep me interested enough to make me want to read that next chapter, for me both the harry potter books, and the davinci code did just that, i'm not bothered about accuracy of fact or myths just so long as it keeps me going.

I was more worried about the shite characters than the myths it was based on - it was barely airport reading material, let alone the blockbuster everyone made it out to be.

+1 for Dan Brown being crappy. If it wasn't for the Emporer's New Clothes-like hypnotism of the masses then more people would have stood up and admitted that at best it was pulp fiction and at worst it was an extremely thin plot was incredibly implausible and featured a cast of unlikeable characters.

I love Steven Fry's review of the book:
Quote:
Complete loose-stool-water. Arse-gravy of the very worst kind.

As far as book recomendtions go, I can pretty much read anything. As far as "clever" stuff goes I love all of John Steinbeck's novels and Bukowsky's a cool ass mo-fo. But to be honest the majority of my money is spent in Morrison's where they have a section dedicated purely to fiction for £1.99 each. Never heard of most of the authors and some of the books turn out to be toss but you can get 5 books for a tenner and guarantee that at least 2 will be decent read.

Agreed, Dan Brown is rubbish. The idea behind The Da Vinci Code is compelling but the characterisation is crap, its just confirmed by his other books.

Reading The Tommyknockers just now. I don't think Stephen King has written a bad book, his characters are attractive and his prose is captivating, some of the phrases he uses are classic.

Just read a book by Haruki Murakami. It was long, certainly had me thinking, but it seemed a wee bit vacuous in the end... A bit over rated. On the other hand I read Cloud Atlas by John Mitchell and found it to be utterly compelling.

And I love Steven Fry, Read The Hippo, Moab is my washpot and The Liar... All good reads for sure, Moab is my favourite though.

Always got a book on the go, much better than a DVD. I would happily work in a book shop and just read all day.

Thumbs Up

The Beach is a good book, by an English author too, made famous by Hollywood so folks assume its all American.

The Wasp Factory is also good, wicked twist at the end. He writes some weird stuff, both as Iain Banks and Iain M Banks.

Thumbs Up

I tell you what its rather encouraging seeing that people do still crack open a book and bother to read these days, most people I know are lucky if they have a stack of zoo/nuts/fhm to gloss through, and even that seems to be a bit of a struggle in a single sitting. I always feel like the nerd given that I havent actually got room for anymore books on my book shelf (well, maybe if I didnt have a great whopping snake tank) so its reasurring to know I prob not alone on this.

+1 Thumbs Up

Currently reading Reaper's Gale, book 7 of Steven Erikson's Malazan series - not a lightweight book in any sense - 900 pages of plot, counterplot and hidden agendas. Will be waiting for the next one to come out in paperback and will re-read George R R Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series whilst I do so.

Something for Everyone (well, almost!)...

Down and Out in Paris and London - George Orwell

Orwell's first published book, part novel, part autobiography, funny, depressing and in some places, dark.

My Father and Other Working Class Football Heroes - Gary Imlach

Imlach (ex Tour and American Football TV anchorman whose side parting looks like it was fashioned by Moses) goes in search of the Man behind the Father. What follows is a fantastically well written testemonial to his Dad and a doffed cap to those that moulded him into the man that he was.

Watchmen - Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons

As featured on BCF

On the Road - Jack Kerouac

Kerouac's carreer defining book telling tales of his haphazard trips on a shoestring around America where he waxes lyrical about the social structure of post-war USA. If he wasn't on drugs when he wrote it then my cock's a kipper.

Whatever Love Means - David Baddeil

The easy going narrative married with Baddeil's moral and social insight makes me think that the author should jack in the questionable comedy routine and take up the pen/word processor/chisel and slate full time.

Oooh James Herbert... The Fog has got to be a favourite... And The Others was great too...

Try Graham Masterton, I read The Secret of Crickley Hall... Very good. Also try Dean Koontz, some of his books are a bit samey but if you like supernatural stuff read the Fear Nothing Series and Phantoms. Those are the only two books that ever kept me up with the light on, (Phantoms especially...)

I love horror and Supernatural thrillers, they're so much more satisfying to read than the straight forward 'feet firmly on the ground' type stories...

Thumbs Up
