Hey, hope everyone's ok.

Just a simple poll, what bike would you rather have; a Honda NSR 125 or a Yamaha YZF-R 125?

If you like, post some of the reasons why you prefer the bike you've chosen.

Many thanks,

Mark

Id pick the yammy purely for the fact its a perfectly capable 4t

155 miles on a tank before you hit reserve

In My Opinion ( <--- please note that bit) I think the YZF looks far better and Iv not seen the clocks on the NSR but the YZR ones are bloody nice.

Apparently the YZF will do 75-80 (Dont ask me to prove it)

I do like the NSR but to be honest i think they had a good run and its time to move out the way now Thumbs Up

i agree the nsr is starting to look slightly dated now but personally i could'nt be doing with a 4 stroke 125, would bore me to death Confused

i would have a new aprillia rs though but thats not on the poll so i picked the nsr out of respect.

Hi

Full licence holder and buying for fun then the NSR definatly. Faster and easier to work on.

YZF has the advantage that Yamaha seem to have a better spares backup these days and is better on fuel. First won't be a problem for the NSR for a good few more years, and the 2nd doesn't bother me that much.

All the best

Keith

YZF, looks great for what it is... afraid I think the NSR looks mostly $hit.

Actually I would probably put the cash towards a 675 Laughing

Since when has depreciation been a bonus? A brand new Yamaha are we talking about?

There are more advantages than disadvantages buying a new bike compared to buying an old one

NSR any day, as long as it's de-restricted. If it had to be restricted (so similar-ish in performance to the YZF) then it'd be a harder choice but I reckon I'd still go for the NSR as buying a new bike is generally a good way to chuck away lots of money.

NSR Thumbs Up

The YZF125 is expensive, and I wouldn't say the extra price is worth it at all. People reckon it looks better, but errr, I'd rather be on an NSR and be overtaking the people on their YZF125 which they think looks better. Razz

Expensive and new isn't good for a first bike, once you've got a bit of experience the chances are you'll want to do your test and get something faster which will mean selling it for a fair bit less than you bought for.

Get an expensive 125 and there's about 99.9% chance that you'll later regret it.

Thank you for all the replies so far, it's really interesting to read what your different views are.

When I get the bike, it would be to practice on after the CBT before taking the full test, so the NSR would have to be a restricted model. This obviously means that both bikes would be nearer to the same performance, and the NSR wouldn't have that plus point of being a lot faster.

Realistically, the Yamaha is too expensive for me to have as a learner bike so in terms of money, the NSR is the preferred option. The only possibility would be if the Yamaha depreciated over a year or so and a used model could become more affordable. The only issue is whether it would actually depreciate enough.

One of my worries at the moment is the idea of two strokes needing a lot more maintenance and sometimes "top engine rebuilds" (will need to research what this actually involves and costs). This is the worry that has also put me off the idea of buying a newer model Aprilia RS125.

Can anyone actually say what the difference is between the maintenance and mechanical problems of a two stroke and a four stroke bike?

What will I have to do to a two stroke NSR or RS compared to a four stroke bike to ensure that it stays running smoothly?

Many thanks again, Thumbs Up

The maintenance is different. 2 stroke needs spark plugs more often (not really an issue, 2 minutes work to change). And some 2 strokes need the piston rings changing occasionally. For example, on the RS125 is is recommended to check the rings at 6000km, and you may as well change them then. That said the NSR seems to often manage up to 30000 miles before needing new rings.

4 strokes need the valves adjusting. They need more frequent oil changes, and often have a filter to be changed at the same time. And if you blow up a 4 stroke you are likely to have a fair bit larger bill.

All the best

Keith

When it comes to a small capacity machines i.e. <300cc

Then the general rule of thumb is: If it's a 2t then you're smiling Thumbs Up

What the performance of the NSR like in comparison to Rs's and Mito's?

Thanks,
Jack

NSR, no doubt about it.

Think of it as two bikes for the price of one. Restricted, it'll please the nanny-state and get you used to riding. Once you're craving power derestrict it and - trust me - it'll feel like a new bike.

It's a rite of passage to own a small capacity 2-stroke once in your life; do eeet. Thumbs Up
