Hi,

Just a quick question.....

Now I have my full license, I would love to do a trackday in order to learn to 'push-it' a bit more, get some experience on a track. I live not too far from Knockhill you see..........

But my question is this: can you hire bikes from circuits for trackdays? or do you need to take your own? Also, do tracks usually do 1-on-1 lessons?

Cheers guys

Mark

Just had a look at the Knockhill website..........

Niall MacKenzie Trackday School = £155 Thumbs Up Very Happy

How good does that sound?

Learn from a pro! It says the course is designed for people new to trackdays, with Niall MacKenzie giving tips on riding and bike set-up. He also comes out on the track with you!!!

But depends on bike hire..... Sad

Yes. You are usually able to hire a trackday bike. Costs can vary but probably expect around £200 per day for a 600cc bike. You wil probably have to pay a deposit too which you will get back if the bike is returned undamaged. G will know more.

The easy answer is 'it depends':

Bikes - expect to pay anything between £125 and £500, depending on the machine (as you would expect, the more exotic the bike, the higher the fee).

You should also expect to pay a deposit to cover damage to the vehicle - £200 to £500 is normal, but if you are hiring something exotic expect to pay more.

Someone at my work has done a trackday at knockhill. He says they give you a cbr600rr to do it on. Sounds good to me! I'll be there aswell as it's something I definetely want to do when I pass my test. He gave me a loan of the video he made when he went there for it. I've still to watch it. I'll tell you a little more when I do.

The https://www.haslamraceschool.com/ is at Donington and for £245 there you get the use of a CBR600RR all day and tuition. Its supposed to be very good.

Personally....

I'd do a track day first, then consider a race school.

When you do a track day you will learn so much yourself, that it seems a waste to pay someone to teach you stuff that you would probably learn anyway.
Once you've got a bit of track experience I'd then go and do a race school, as you'll have a better idea of what you need to learn. You will also be in a better position to learn what you should be learning rather than just learning about 'being on track'.

On the other hand it could be looked at that it's better to learn 'properly' from scratch... but my personal opinion would be that you will get a lot more from the race school if you've already had some track time.

Personally I'd say track days are better value for money, you'll get more track time than at a school. Also by doing a school on a hire bike you'll just end up learning to ride a bike you don't own and will likely not be as fast as you would be on a bike you are familliar with.

Most track days will offer one on one training included in the price and the instructor will be a racer or ex racer anyway.

Personally I'd rather do two track days and have £50 left in my pocket than pay £250 for one day where you'll likely only get 3 or 4 sessions on track.

Fair comments Thinking . i don't really like the thought of thrashing my bike round a track though. Another thing I was thinking of doing was some sort of advanced riding course. Do you think that would be worthwhile?

Good point Dusty, but isn't normal bike hire £200 a day? With the Haslam school you get the bike hire and leathers etc. if you want them.

Its horses for courses tho really, same as anything else.
