OK bit of a exhaust rookie here and need some advice, I am looking to buy some new 'louder' exhausts for my R1, straight through would be preferable, I have found a few options so far, and need to know what is what;

The cheapest are the Micron's at £350ish, the owner told me they have removable baffles....What is this? What do removable baffles achieve? Is it the sound of the cans?

Or,

A set of Brothers. These look shite but might sound nice, I dont know!

lastly a set of Yoshimura, once again this has an option for removable low volume insert...Whats that?

Can anyone help? Or have suggestions?

Cheers

Basically, all of the baffles and low volume insert stuff is to make the exhaust quieter (for road use) as with out the baffles there for race use so not road legal. but the likely hood of getting pulled over for loud exhausts is low.

Don't forget: Akraprovic
Scorpion

A baffle is a little tube which goes in the end of the exhaust can and causes some turbulence in the exhaust gases exiting it. This causes it to be quieter than just straight through. It means you can make it quiet if you want to (for an MOT for example) or take it out to be loud (only one screw/bolt holding it in usually).

I would look at the Akraprovic carbon ones myself, same as they use in WSB on the Sentander bikes.

What's the point of having a quiet bike? That's just boring.

Yeah, I might give the Akrapovics a miss, they are rather pricey, but thanks all for the explanations on the Baffles, i might go for the Micron ones.

Very Happy

Ahh, so the noise is more important than the actual riding? I didn't realise that.

I was tempted to give them ago, you can choose all of the bits you want so you will have an almost compleat custom exhaust made by you! you have the choice of oval, tri-oval, round, carbon fiber, titanium. you can choose the end caps. i will try it one day. But as ive just bought an Akra....

With most race cans they say you should get your bike re set up, i think Akras cost a bit more is because they are one of the few makes where you don't have to get it re dynod. i think along with scorpion. but TBH i think the difference is minimal. Thumbs Up

Demonic69, is yours a bolt on or slip on?

If bolt on they cam make you one, if its a slip on, buy a link pipe from a different manufacture (Akra, scorp, micron ect..) then get the diameter and ask for one that will fit it...

Hope that makes sence...

Bull$hit, that statement must originally have been up by a biker that has never driven a car. You would need the windows open and the stereo off to hear a bike coming and then the bike is only louder once it has passed.

I do drive a car, and i can hear them it just depends on what bike...Wink
Most bikes come out on sunny, warm days too so most ( big generalization) people would have their windows down

Currently it's a bolt-on but they don't have the back-end. Gonna get a link-pipe made up for their standard slip-on

Yeah Micron have gone into receivership/liquidation. Might be a good time to get one cheap Very Happy

And EVERYONE will do a can for an R1. Scorpion, Yoshi, Arrow, BlueFlame, Wolf, Lazer etc etc.
I'd keep an eye on ebay mate.
The Gorgeous Blue Flame ones are only about £250 with the carbon tip too

Yeah, I looked on Ebay, and the only 2008 cans are the three types in my OP. I will go for that Micron I think as its baffles are easily removable.

Cant wait to get it. Very Happy

I would go for the Akrapovic everytime if it was me. I know they are pricey but you really are paying for the quality and probably a little bit of 'tart' factor too.

You paid good money no doubt for a brand new bike, surely sticking a pair of Akra cans on isn't a great deal more expense. Don't spoil it with something substandard. Thumbs Up

Hmmm, you got me thinking now, but the Mrs will KILL me if I spend much more on the bike. what do you think of those Micron cans in my OP?

And, why are Akras so much better? weight? Design? Whats the attraction?

The only aftermarket cans I have seen and heard on an R1 are Akro's, so I can't comment on the others.

They sound and look great.

Might be worth speaking to CCC, Fuel or Beowulf for a UK based supplier.

Get it done...you know it makes sense! Thumbs Up
