The girlfriend went to a bike shop yesterday to get a new battery for the GPz305. It's well known as a dodgy backstreet place but they said they had one in stock and how far wrong can you go with supplying a battery?

Well, their fitter, being a helpful soul, offered to fit it.

First pull the side-panel so far off the tank that you snap the bottom attachment off.

Now remove the battery.

Now wander around the shop. Discover you don't in actual fact have one in stock despite having assured us on the phone you did. Offer to fit a different on with the wrong Amp hour rating, then find it doesn't fit in the hole anyway.

Put the old battery back in. Hmm that's odd, can't get the terminal bolts to go in. Don't for one second consider the little square nuts they screw into might have fallen out.

Ahh, I know, just screw a couple of self-tappers into the top of the battery terminals. It'll not matter that they are far too big and are standing 1/8" proud of the top of the terminal, entirely failing to hold the ring against the top of the battery. I'm sure the electricity will find its way round somehow.

So I get a very grumpy and disgruntled girlfriend turning up at my work having walked three miles in her bike gear after it refused to start. I assume the battery has finally given up the ghost, bump it and ride it home, leaving the car for the GF.

It isn't until I get back home, lift the saddle and wonder why there are two rusty self-tappers loosely stuck into the battery in place of the copper-greased allen head machine screws I left there that the cause of the failure became apparent.

Screwed them down properly and fired it up first push.

Scary thing is, this guy works on peoples actual bikes, and he does MOTs. After that debacle I wouldn't even let him oil the chain on my push bike.

I like a good bodge every now and then, but that fails on the first criteria. Shocking.

Do you think it had anything to do with the fact it was your GF that went (thought she was a soft touch etc)?

Either way, what a divvy.

Hope you're naming and shaming in the Scottish section.

Well if it is well known as a dodgy backstreet place, it begs the question why go there and support his business in the first place?

Because he was the only person in the county who said he had one in stock. This later turned out to be an untruth.

I know the guy who owns the overall venture socially so I won't name them here (car sales, car and bike MOTs, bike sales, bike workshop). He normally looks after the car sales part, rest assured I will be having words with him next time I see him.

It's at the back of a used car lot in Carlisle just in case anyone finds themselves there with their bike.
