I know the title is confusing but, does any one know if you can get restrictors for a 125 to make it usable of a 16 year old liecnce ??
I am asking this question on behalf of my brother as he would like a cheep 125 but restricted so he can ride it on a 16 year old licence.

Thanks
Kev

P.S. please dont leave advise like "tell him 2 get a 50 " as he doesnt want one!!!!!

When your 16 your restricted by engine size and speed/power afaik, so there is no legal way for a 16 year old to ride a 125 on the roads.

No. 16 year old can only ride 50cc's, no capable of more than 30mph.

And I think your '?' key is stuck? Confused

Tell him to get a 50.

Sorry, but that's the law. Technically you could probably get a 125 cylinder filled in with a much smaller bore and put a 50cc piston in... but the law is 50cc. Or just stick a 50cc engine in a 125cc chassis, either way would probably be a considerable waste of money.
Perhaps you should suggest walking as an alternative and see how a 50 sounds then Smile.

Not really sure but are 16yr olds allowed to ride 125cc bikes? I thought 50cc was their limit. Then as soon as they reach 17 they can ride 125cc without retaking CBT.

In other european countries you are allowed to ride a 125 at 16. In some it might be as low as 15, but i'm not sure. In germany for example you can ride a 125 at 16, but they are still limited to 15bhp, and in addition have an 80km/50mph max speed limit allowed, so the manufacturers have to find a way of limiting the bikes to 50mph, (usually done with different gearing/ speed or rev limits in the CDI, or Speedo). In the u.k. we have the pleasure of dangerously slow 30mph restricted 50's instead! Tell your mate that if he wants 2 wheels now then he will have to get a 50cc, and in my opinion a cheap scoot is the best type of 50 to go for. New machines depreciate rapidly, and sports or trailbike style 50's really aren't worth all that cash, unless you get something old like a DT/TS/AR which you will find difficult to tune to get much over 30-35mph anyway. A cheap 1-2yr old scoot, de-restricted, and maybe with a 70cc kit, er i mean 50cc lol! will be the best bet for a year.

The DT and AR both get to 45-50 okay I thought.

Bigbores kits can be got cheaply for both... If I rember the ar80 engine slots straight in... and they don't go to bad; I was 'beaten' by one when I was on my cg (my combined weight with the bike was probably twice that of the other diddy rider/bike though).

Agreed that AR80's are nippy enough, but if you were to piss about with a 10yr old or more 50cc geared bike, trying to tune it or swap the engine/fit a big bore etc, then you would be better off and faster if you got a cheap 1-2yr old T&G like an SR50/Runner/NRG etc, as these can be brought nearly new at much cheaper prices than you'd pay for an old knackered geared 50 if you can find one that is. That was the point i was trying to make before, and i personally belive that at 50cc a T&G scoot is often faster round town, and only the fastest sports 50's and maybe some trailies like the Derbi Senda are quicker flat out than a decent scoot. Its definately cheaper and eaiser to get tuning parts for most T&G 50's as well.
